Just about everytime I start my bike it sounds like the starter is grinding the gears instead of turning anything. It does the kickback thing also. Did a search on the forum, think I found my problem. It needs a new compensator. Beleive I should get the SE compensator. Is there any thing else I should look at?
I am wondering how hard of job is this to replace. I have service manual.
Not sure why / how anybody would think compensator ???

texasmail1962: Have you checked the starter's mounting bolts? More common of a problem than most know. There is a Technical Service Bulletin on that issue (M-1231 dated September 26, 2008). I can't upload the pdf file for you because of the file's size. Search this forum; it has been discussed before.

Just do a poll asking the thousands here on the forum who have changed to an SE comp what they think. Also why do you think the MOCO has put the SE comp on all new 11' bikes? Hopefully the OP hasn't already eaten up his ring gear or starter gear.

I just brought my bike in last week for the same thing thinking for sure I needed a new compensator. They said no it is the starter drive so I had them put one in and that was the problem, now it starts just fine. I was almost disapointed I wanted an excuse to put in the S.E. compensator
I took my starter off and the pinion gear looks bad. Looks like its been grinding instead of engaging. Guess I will replace the starter drive clutch first.

This was the solution for my bike. No problems now.
