The speedometers are driven by a little stepper motor. They are installed to the back of the speedometer and the needle we look at is simply pressed on from the front. The chart showing the speed is glued to the face of the speedometer. None of it is installed with exacting precision. The best you can expect is close. If you're right on with a GPS, consider yourself lucky.
My speedo is 5mph+ over what my GPS says. Just returned from a ride to Reno, NV. with a buddy on his 06 SG & his speedo was dead on to his GPS (he has aftermarket 18" wheels/tires). What I thought really sucks is my odometer was also off +5 mile per hunderd vs. his!
I did get better gas milage than him! LOL!!
what i find funny is that a friend of mine can use his gps in his house and it shows his house moving at 3 mph!
but yeah, your speedo can be up to 10% off. my 07 would show an indicated 70, but the roadside radar would clock me at 64. i just ignored it and ran as if it were correct. kept me from getting any speeding tickets
I often find the the GPS and speedometer aren't matched up. I don't think its to much of a big deal for me since I'm not that big on speeding. So if I'm doing 70mph...my GPS usually says 68-69 (which in my mind means I'm going slower LOL). Both units have a +/- range.
