Default Speedometer Accuracy

I just returned from a trip and noticed the speedometer read 3 MPH higher than the GPS. This was confirmed by several radar detector displays along the highway. Is this within factory specs? BMWs are known for reading higher than actual. I haven't experienced this with my FLHS. Does my speedometer need to be re-calibrated, or is this acceptable?

How fast were you going when you checked it? A speedo should be no more than 5% off in either direction plus or minus. That is set by the federal government. So if you doing 60MPH, then your speedo is within spec, if not, then it might need to get recalibrated.

Many threads have been done on this subject. Most of HD speedos are off about 4 mph at 60.

My speedo shows 70...GPS says 66.
If you are stopped by a cop....show him your GPS 'MAX SPEED' display. LOL

My '07 was 2½ mpg higher than actual, based on the GPS, and after installing a Dunlop E3 rear tire that has a tad larger diameter that discrepency was reduced to 2 mph. My old RK had a "calibrated" speedometer, as designated on the gauge itself, but the new bike had no such designation. So, I guess HD has devolved into the legal realm as has everyone else. I assume they want to make the speedometer optmistic to twart any lawsuits that might develop from a gauge reading lower than actual, as was my old RK by 1mph. It was supposedly calibratred to 1½%, and its case -1 mph @ 60mph. I wish these gauges would just give me the correct speed instead of skewing it in favor of some more favorable legal position. As a result I'm using the GPS for figuring my actual speed, or by subtracting 2 mph from the reading on the gauge. It all seems so mindless.

FWIW, BMW speedos are usually even more optimistic that this.

This topic has come up a few times on here and i've noticed that most guys' bikes and mine included (I've done the same test with a GPS)read 3 mph FASTER on the speedo than the GPS says. So the speedogives a3 mph HIGHER reading than you're actually travelling.

IE: At 70 mph on my bike's speedo the GPS says I'm doing 67 mph.

I guess if I had my druthers and it's not exact, I'd want my speedo to tell me a higher speed rather than a lower speed cuz that keeps the CHP off my a$$!
