I did my 20,000 mile service yesterday. Changed oil in all three holes. New Air Filter, plugs looked good.
I filled it up with gas andvtook it for a little 40 mile spin yesterday and everything seemed fine.
I got up this morning to go for a ride and a few miles in I looked at my gas gauge and it showed less than half a tank. I thought wtf, and when I stopped at a light, it went up to a little over a half tank. I looked at my remaining miles and it showed 120 miles left and I had only ridden 40.
I kept going and each time I stopped the gauge would go up and as soon as I took off, the gauge would drop up to 1/4 tank.
I thought maybe the gas gauge is just messed up, so I rode for awhile and stopped at a gas station to fill up to see what my mileage is. I had 80 on my trip meter and put 4 gallons in. 20 mpg.
Looked the bike over and didn't see anything wrong. I always spill oil on the regulator when I pull the oil filter, but had not problems before. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.
Rode 40 miles home and put less than a gallon back in the tank. Back to 40mpg. Anyone have any ideas for me? The bike ran and sounded fine during the whole ride.
What year bike? If pre 08, those 61001-01 fuel filter kits can be a bear to get in if you don't know how to push on the spring when installing. You could have messed up the float/sender
Well, I ate lunch and decided to take the bike back out this afternoon and run a tank of gas through it. The bike still ran normally and my gas mileage was back around 40mpg again. I'm guessing I got a bad batch of gas or something. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see what happens.
