Default Cruise control install heads-up

Not too long ago I asked on this forum if a 2006 cruise control would fit a 2007 FLHTC. Folks told me that Harley changed connectors supplier in 2007 so the 2006 wouldn't be a plug-and-play deal. Well after searching for a 2007 cruise to no avail, my friend decided to try a modify a 2006 to fit on his bike. Actually, I did it. The servo part of the cruise fits as it should. The wiring harness plugs right in and the same goes for the on/off switch in the fairing. The new handlebar switches are another story. The connector on the cruise harness is the Deutsch type and on the bike (under fairing cap), it's different (Molex I was told here). We ran to an electronic parts store and while they could've ordered the parts, I decided to make an all new connector with parts they had in stock. I proceeded to make all the connections and everything seemed to be working fine until we did the "cable lash initialisation" procedure. The cruise just wouldn't blip the throttle like it says in the instructions I found on the web. So we did some troubleshooting and (here's the heads-up part) I went to take a look at the cable connection to the cruise servo. Well what do you know, the cable going to the throttle body wasn't connected to the cruise servo. We connected them together and now everything works as it should. We probably got them disconnected while instaling the cable. Nor really sure but now it works.

Damn I'm good.

Thank to everyone who gave me info.

Congrats on adapting the '06 kit to your buddy's '07 FLHTC. Perhaps you can identify the connectors you used in place of the Molex connectors for the handlebar switch harness.

Also, what did you do to install the clutch interlock switch in the '06 harness, since the '06 didn't have one.

For others who may encounter a similar problem (HD deletes a part from the current catalog), the parts department at the dealership can use a "Parts Locator" feature that is a database of all HD stores' parts inventory. It will often show dealerships with parts in stock that are no longer in the catalog and you can buy the part directly from the dealer with it in stock or your local dealer can arrange a transfer.

Again, congrats on a succesful project.

I used this type of connector. Only with 12 pins.

All I had to do is crimp the pins to the wire and solder them, then insert the pin in the connector 'till it lock into place making sure to match the position of the color coded wires on the male and female connectors. I didn't have to mess with the interlock switch because we only took off the right handlebar switches. We traced the right handlebar switches connector and disconnected it. The cruise control kit comes with a new switch assembly that incorporates the cruise control toggle switch. The on/off switch is located in the fairing beside the ACC switch. I then cut the stock connector from the bike and the new handlebar switch module off to install my own connector. Cruise-less connector has only 10 wires instead of 12 for the cruise but the connector on the bike has the 12 wires. Just a simple matter of matching the color coded wires. On a side note, all wires have their exact match execpt one. On one side one wire is white with yellow stripe and on the other side it's white with brown stripe. Can't remember what wire comes from where but they go together.

All in all, I tought it was going to be a much more difficult job than it actually was.

Default What part number did you use?

Hi - thanks for posting this. I'm in exactly the same position. Just picked up a 2007 Glide Classic and I want to put cruise on it. The local dealer says they can't help me. What part number '06 cruise kit did you use to start with?

Thanks in advance for any help.

See my reply in the above thread. I'd previously replied to Desoto's orignial post. He chose to replace the connectors to non-OEM connectors rather than simply re-use the connector from the removed right side switch harness.

Default Got it

Got it - thanks for that. I was pretty sure that was going to be the part, but I hadn't seen your other post yet.

I think I'll get the part from Zannotti and see how it all works out. I'm assuming that the wire/plug changes are fairly straightforward? I'm an OK mechanic and will generally jump into something and get it done well, but I'm not the best at electrical stuff. It takes a lot of thought to get it right.

Default Just to be sure

The kit 77196-04 has a right control that includes the radio controls, yes/no? I just happened to think of that. I assume it does.

Yes; the kit comes with a complete set of right hand switches: black switch housings, switches already installed in the housings with switch caps, harness and connector attached.
