I just bought a 2000 flhri 34000 miles mint condition. Having never owned a fueli i bought this bike from a dealer and when i test road it it seemed to miss a little choking and backfiring throught the breather. He told me it just needed to warm up but it was raining so i didnt have a chance Only does this at about 38 when in 3rd gear at low throttle, Also when i crack the throttle only for a quick second throught all gears, and the other day it died on me at idle, also the rev seems to stick a little high for a while, the other day it stuck enough on start up i had to turn off and restart, then was fine. Ipaid a lot of money for this bike. Anybody got any ideas? New to the forums. Had a95 sporty 68000 never had a problem. Thanks for any help. I changed theplugs and ran 2 tanks of injector cleaner .

I assume the FLHRI I stands for fuel injection?? Take the bike to a reputable tuner who can dyno tune it.Sounds like your tune is off!!! You probably want a good tuning device.I don't know if the TTS is available for that year.SERT might be the next best thing. You have to find a tuner that fluent in it's use!!!
I would check to see what, if any, FI engine tuners it has. I had an '06 FI Deuce with a PCIII and eventually had some of the same problems. If your bike does already have a tuner of some sort, I believe you should have it dyno tuned. I may be wrong, but I believe these tuners lose some of their programming over time. If your bike doesn't have one of these...an experienced mechanic anyways.
I might be wrong, but it seems like I remember that all of the 2000 models still had the Magneti Marelli fuel injection. I think they changed to Delphi in 2002. I have heard that the Magneti Marelli systems can be problematic, as in unexplained loss of idle settings and other issues, requiring the system to be reset periodically.
I ran into problems with a 2001 FLHTCU with the MM injection, and the techs at the dealer couldn't figure it out. It took the shop foreman to get it working correctly again (a good case of experience over training). Even he couldn't say what caused the system to "lose its mind", and he warned me that it might do it again at any time.
While I do not have any experience with any of the after market "tuners", I have read that there are much fewer options for those with the MM injection system than with the Delphi, and that being the case, you may have to deal with your local dealership to get the problems resolved instead of being able to use a "tuner" to work it out.
Sorry that I don't have any helpful suggestions, but good luck with it. Hopefully it will be something simple and inexpensive.
I sold my 2000 EG in December 09, 2 times in 10 years I fought with the same issue you are having right now, I fckd with it for months, changing packings, sensors, shooting wires everything, I mean everthing. Finally took it to the dealer, they had it a week, had to get the big boyz involved at the plant, once I picked it up both times it ran great. Still don't know what they did. I agree with kwayz, the M&M fuel induction had it's quirks, I would take it to the dealer and have them look at it. Let us know how you make out. Good luck.
First off, you got porked by the dealer. That bike should have ran smooth as silk, rain or not. Hopefully you can take it back to them and make them fix it.
Does your red engine light come on while the bike is running? It might come on then go off. If the bike is basically stock, I think the problem may be the cylinder head temperature sensor is bad. I've got a 98 FI Road King and had problems with it running crappy and also crazy idling. It would go to about 1/4 throttle by itself while idling. There is a way to retrieve the fault codes that is listed in the factory service manual. Pick one up if you don't already have one. Once you see the code (if there is one stored) it will tell you which sensor is bad.
Do a Google search and you'll find quite a bit on the MM set up. They either run decent or they're a nightmare. If it doesn't have an aftermarket tuner I would definitely look at that as a first purchase. I had a PCIII on mine for a while and it made a world of difference. BUT, any tuning add-on won't do much if the MM isn't set up right to start with. Finding someone to work on it may be your biggest challenge. If you're somewhat mechanically inclined they really aren't that difficult. Basic hand tools and a digital voltmeter is all you really need. One of the biggest problems with them is bad/dirty connections. A cheap start would be to trace every connector and check it for tightness. You'd be amazed at how the connectors pins become loose over time. Many of mine needed a slight crimp to get them to feel tight again. While your checking them for tightness spray them really good with an electronic contact cleaner. Like I said, do a google search and you'll find quite a bit.
