Default Redline shock proof question.

I've always run Amsoil in my trans but a mechanic said to try Redline shock proof. Never had an issue with the Amsoil but I put the Redline in anyway. I've noticed that when the bike is cold and I first start out the shift in to 1st gear is a little stiff. The weather is cooling here in the east and I wonder if that has something to do with this stiffness. There was no shuch rtiffness during the warmer weather. The Redline has been in there for around 4,000 miles. Once the tranny warms pu everything is back to normal. Opinions?

I've heard pros and cons about Redline, and here's my take on it. After looking inside the tranny with 50k miles of Shockproof and seeing virtually no wear, I'd say the stuff works pretty damn good. Even some of the machine marks that should have worn away were still there.

I live a little further south than you, but I ride year round.

I've ran redline in my Superglide for 30,000 miles and then in my Road King since the day I brought it home from the dealer (30,000 miles)

I haven't noticed any changes from temperature even down into the 20s. I do let the bike idle to warm once it gets below 40 or so outside though.

I'm in Canada an would not use anything but Redline in my tranny. I do let the bike warm up and then ride pretty easy for a few minutes until everything is warmed on cold mornings. I wouldn't worry about the first shift being stiffer than in hot weather, any standard transmission would be that way.

I noticed the same thing as the weather cools down.
I do run Redline Heavy Shockproof and it's a little bit "thicker feeling" than other transmission oils.
Usually I warm the bike about 2 minutes down to around 60 degrees , and I warm it for around 5 minutes when it gets lower than that.
Down around 32-40 degrees , I even warm it longer before I ride , the engine seems to run too cold in the late fall and early winter , and my commute is only about 5 miles to work.
I don't doubt the redline protects just fine at low temps , but the tranny feels pretty stiff anyway at lower temps , and shifts better with a little heat in the morning.
I ran Amsoil and it did the same thing , just not to as great an extent as the Redline.

I ride Polar Bear runs and no issues. My rule of thumb, I warm the bike up before going. Start the bike up, then put gear on. Since you have more gear on in the winter, bike runs a little more than on the summer. Hope this helps.

You could always try the Shockproof Lightweight.

Redline makes a Tranny fluid for V Twins with shockproof. I 've been using this to reduce overall heat. At 47 degrees Saturday morning, no stiffness with tranny.
