Glowing Pipes
I was driving an 02 Yama,1600 air cooled V Twin Roadstar.
The Yama did not have any heating problems, and meet EPA regs.
Roadstar had an air pump, that would pump air into the heads when decelerating.
This would cause unburned excess fuel to burn off, without having to run the bike
in a lean condition.
I love the RK,but hated to have to spend another $1000,to make it run right.
I think 19K should have bought me a bike that didn"t cook my jewels.
MoCo needs to get their act together.
Has anyone with the glowing pipes checked your oil temp? I got a big shock today on my 07 Street Glide. I installed the Wally's oil temp gauge in the dash in place of the air temp gauge this morning. During a thirty minute ride, the gauge steadily rose past the 300 degree mark and settled around what looked like 325. This was on an overcast 85 degree day riding at a steady 60 mph in fifth gear on a flat highway.
Also as a reference, REDLINE oil temp on my 4-cylinder, air-cooled Cessna is 240 degrees!!! Air-cooled engines are not supposed to run as hot as these engines are running.
(Warning: Long Rant Ahead. Safety Gear Required.)
Winston Churchill once said something like this; I don't remember the exact words:
The danger in a democracy is that in times of crises the peoplelook to expand the reach and power ofgovernment to resolve the crises at hand. But once thecrisis is passed, thenow burdensome and obsolete structure of government refuses to be dismantled and begins to work solely to perpetuate its ownexistance at the expense of the people who clamored for its creation.
May I add to the Old Bulldog's astute observation: One of the strategies thus employed by those who gain power and wealth from government expansion is toperpetuate fabricated crises as an excuse to expand government.
Anyone remember:
Killer bees? Hybridized European/African strains have been in America since 1900, you could buy queens from the Sears and Roebuck catalog in the 1920's.My father was a beekeeper; he and others had such bees in southern Maryland in the early 70's. He eventually destroyed them, they were tooagressive. But according to 30 years of media BS,allegedly the straingot loose in SouthAmerica in the 50's and were advancing on the US about 30 miles a year and would cross the Rio Grande in 1989 causing all manner of havoc.Any reporter could found out with a teeny bit of researchit was all bunk; "killer bees" have been in the US since my great-grandparents'day.
The incredible vanishing ozone layer? Back the 1890's scientists noticed that arctic/antarctic explorers reported that once above (or below) a certain parallel, they stopped getting colds and flus. It was known in a few decades that UV light was extremely highat the poles killing germs because there was noozone layer there.
Y2K? When the fluff began, I talked to knowledgeable computer geeks (one who was at the age of 18 writing sub atomic particle physics programs for the US Army)and they all told me it was totally overrated hype.As early as the fall of 1998 I was proclaiming Y2K as the winner of the "Killer BeeAward." An award I made up for the "Hoax of the year" apologies toSen. William Proxmire and his "Golden Fleece Award."
Global Warming. YES IT'S A FRAUD! It's been known for centuriesthe earth is NOT static, and sincethe 1890'sscientists have understood there are regular heating and cooling cycles - it was during this time frame that the Ice Age theory was born.Speaking of the Ice Age, remember thedinosaurs?Fossils of tropical animals and plants have been found in Antarctica. Fossils of sea creatures have been found on mountain tops. The earth is not static! As recently as1,500 years ago (long before the burning of fossil fuels)the Earth was much warmer than it is now; this period is known as the Medieval Warm Period and lasted over 1,000 years. As far back as 1900 scientists predicted that the 1980's- 1990's would be thebeginning ofa new warm period. Theybegan calling the period from about 1,000 AD to1900"The Mini Ice Age."Note: Their predictions were based on NATURAL cycles, NOT on the activities of man, nor on the effects of modern industrialization!Mostscientists actually believe the Ice Age is the normal climate ofEarth, and that Ice Ages last from1 to 3 million years, interdispersed withcyclic 10,000 year warm periods
PS you guys are scaring me into not buying any Harley newer than an '05.

Heat issue has been beat to death, just plan on getting some kind of fuel managment device and maybe true duals.

Short of serious engine/tranny work my dealers "service shop" will never see my bike. (((knocking on wood)))
