My '11 had a really decent sound to it stock. I did replace the mufflers with V&H fishtails, I was happy with the original sound but wanted something a little more vintage-looking.
If you want I can check the part numbers on my OEM mufflers to compare to your 09.
I had the V&H Oval Slipons and took them off. They had a great "around town" sound but on a long trip they caused major hearing fatigue. I put the original mufflers back on and what a difference. Now, the bike is a little too quiet for my taste. Seems like I went from a Harley-Davidson to a General Electric. I want something just a little louder.
As for performance, the V&H was a major improvement over stock. With the stock mufflers the engine can't breathe. I would expect an improvement in performance and sound going to mufflers without cats. That is if the stock 2009 mufflers have the cats inside them. I would also expect a used set of stock 2011 mufflers to be inexpensive since many riders change their mufflers.
I have two sets of stock mufflers on Craigslist, Cheap! 08 and 11s.
As you say, many people change them out. I haven't had any interest in the first three days of the add, so I bet you can score a pair locally for under $100.
