Very glad this came up as the headlight is the next issue I want to address to my bike. Mine is an 01 so the entire 7" light needs to be changed. I was thinking of looking at places like Autozone as it is a simple 3 prong much like on many cages. Not to hijack the thread but thoughts on this idea? Not about to lay out over 500 bones on a headlight, especially after what I read here so far.
Then going to look where we bought some other xenon 6000k lights from Xenon Bargins on Ebay.
Will be lookin at the model that uses one bulb for high and one bulb for low.
This kit comes with a lifetime warranty.
Also on the running lights. take yer bulb out. Go to Auto Zone and look at a 894L Clear tip bulb and put it in yer running lights.
The stock runnin light bulb is 27k, the 894L clear tip is 35K
Hope this helps........
This makes a huge difference.
I put the HID lights on my bike, they were installed by Hemrick Performance. I have to tell you it is far better than the birthday candle I had before.
When we've installed the HID in bikes it shows it needs to have wires run to the battery.
We pull the gas tank and run 14 guage wires down the wiring harness that's in plastic to the battery. We have plug in fuses on both ends.
Then we have to find a place for the balast and everything else is plug and play.
Also several wires to tie up.
What is DDM and how can I order a kit for my 2007 Fatboy? Any info would be great.
Fatboyonfatboy,
Here is the link for DDM www.ddmtuning.com. I put a set of 55watt 5000k (pure white) on my Eldorado and love them. I can see a lot more of the road. I plan to put a set on my Heritage Softail Classic as soon as the weather breaks.
I've done many of these HID kits on my streetbikes and atv's. They all worked great and at $38 a kit(ebay), they are cheap. They are also all the same. Some need relays and some do fine without.
If they are asking for power/ground to battery, I'll assume they want a relay installed.
I've yet to do a kit in the Harley. The passing lamps color is what gets me. That and the fact the light turns on with the ignition, that quick on/off stuff is rough on ballasts.
All cars since 2001 have the self leveling system in the HID lights. Some are more noticable than others. I have had cars (2001 Audi A4 Quattro) that looked like the lights of a corvette coming on as they rotated into place. Some level before they turn on. You just do not notice it. All cars so equipped have body angle sensors in the suspension that tells the computer the attitude of the vehicle and adjust the level of the headlights accordingly. My 2002 VW Passat W8 were so quick you couldn't tell they were moving but the mechanisim was there. It is required by federal law.
My 05 Escalade does not have auto-leveling HID's. 07 and up might.
Either way, it's the lumens that gets the glare issue going. Stock halogen outs out about 1700lumens....these HID kits put out about 3200 lumens. That's a huge difference and without a cut-off it throws light all over. Which is what makes them technically illegal.
Some HID bulbs comes with shields just for this....it's a band-aid but helps with glare. When we started doing these in ATVs's, we had to make the bulbs fit, while this was our main focus, we noticed that bulb depth in the housing affected the cut-off greatly. The farther that bulb was placed into the housing, the greater the glare and less sharp the cut-off was. It's a huge hassle to to make a shim that matches a bulb base, the easier way is to just aim the headlight down or use the shield.
had an HID dual bulb kit in my 09 Ultra and on a trip last year all the power went out. then the electic switched on and the bike ran but the HId lights didn't. got back to the motel and tore out the HIDs and put the stock bulb back in thinking the HIDs caused the electic failure. a few weeks later found out the issue was a bad ground to frame. Ok, but the HID s didn't come on when the electic did. In retrospect, I'm sure the HID fuse blew since it was linked to the high beam circuit. Went back to my Osram 80/100s but I have to say the HID headlight lit up the road and all the signage. No complaints.
just giving a heads up to make sure you have a fuse for the HID circuit. Shittt happens.
I'm getting the LED head light now that they have been upgraded from what I read on this forum's member's contributions.
