Default 5000 Mi. service $$$

Might have a new record here. My estimate from the dealer yesterday was $350.00!!!! In fairness, they're really good and I like their people, but $75.00/hr + Redline = Big $$ OUCH!

I paid less than $100 for the repair manual. An added bonus (besides all the $$ still in your pocket) is you know it was done right!

If everything as the book ststes is done then the price is not bad for an expert. however, most dealers just change the oil and filter ,kick the tires, test ride and send you on your way. Thats a rip off.

If you're uncomfortable with your own wrenching and you like your dealer, $350 sounds about right and $75 per hour isn't really out of line. Here in SE Wisconsin, I've seen rates from $67 per hour up to $85 per hour.

I have the dealer do my 1K service but after that I do all of it myself.

You think the 5K is bad wait till you do one that includes the steering head bearings. I paid to have it done and happened to talk to the mechanic that was working on it at the Stealer and from what he said I know he just checked the steering head for tightness and never repacked the bearings. Once they take it in the back, who knows what they actually do. I would rather do everything I possibly can so you know it is done. Mechanics should be like those Japeneses chefs working right in front of you. The rates per hour we pay should at least allow you to know they did what you paid for.

Just had my 5000K service done at Red River HD in Iowa Park, Texas. Total bill - $216.00. IMHO well worth the money. They went through the whole check list with me and even washed and polished the bike. These guys are great.

I posted this same thing a while back. Took the advice of most everyone here and idi it myself. Bought a service manual and a case of 20-50 Amsoil and haven't looked back.

Yep. That'll be the plan going forward. A new shop manual is about $58.00, but I haven't gotten one, yet. I used to do it on my Honda, but I'm still learning HD's. I thought I'd have the dealer do the first one (it already had the 1000 mi. when I bought it from them). I'll continue the education and start in when I have the manual, updated tools, and a lift. I can, at least, handle the basic maintenence stuff. At these prices it ought to save me a pile. Ride safe everyone. -Jim
