I was rear-ended in Austria by a Honda ST-1300. I missed a 180 degree switchback and came to a sudden stop, the guy behind me used me for extra stopping power..
So presumably you paid out for his damages too, as you'd stopped without warning, then?
Maybe it's the MoCo limited edition saddlebag guards with second sight that you need, perhaps..

Not his fault so he would not need to pay out. If the guy hit him then he was following too close in the first place.
As far as cosmetics, well that is all in the eye of the beholder. Some people like the look and some don't. I have the twin rail bars on my classic and I am not sure I would take them off. I kind of like the look personally.
They do offer protection. I took a hit on the right side hard enough to twist the passenger footboard completly off of the bike. The saddlebag guard bent and the bag got dented. I hate to think of what the rear of the bike would have looked like had the guard not been there...
I'd like to know how you "dent" ABS or fiberglass, it isn't going to happen, it either breaks or gets scratched it doesn't dent. By the way I don't like the looks so I'll take my chances, of course I don't have an engine guard either, but that was a different thread.
I didn't like the look of the twin rail at first when I bought my 09 Classic last yr,my 06 standard didn't have them. But now the look has kinda grown on me and I think she would look a little naked without them, and I'm sure they provide some minimal protection.

Plus for protection and minus for the look or to clean the bags, I lost control on a road snake going 75 mph and side swipe the concrete center divided on the left both engine and saddle bag guards and hwy pegs were shaved to about 1/4" but no paint damage or injury.
Yep, I know the Limited has the main saddlebag guards that I see in your picture. My question relates to the additional "twin rail" saddlebag guards that the UC, but not the Limited, have. Do they offer any real additional protection, or are they mainly for looks?
They will protect your saddlebags from car doors and they will keep the saddlebag from completely falling off.
something else ... From time to time on here you read about someone not properly securing a saddle bag, and losing it on the highway somewhere. That won't happen if you have the guards and the rails. It'll come loose, but it won't fall off.
