Not true on the brake fluid.My 05 softail uses DOT5 my 05 FLHT uses DOT 4.Should be marked on the resovior top.You just need to push pistons back in.Should have done that step first.You can still do it though.Don't get in a hurry and break something.One pad should be done at a time.

I just replaced my rear brake pads on the 08. Not much to add except I gently levered the pistons in first with a screwdriver and then a socket extension. It's not elegant but it works.
+1 on a thorough cleaning of the caliper and pistons. All told the brake pad replacement took twenty minutes.

Tomorrow. It's a buddy's bike that I'm doing the service on. He's on a trip so not in a hurry. I've changed many pads and haven't had a problem until now.
