Default GPS for IPhones

I have a Zumo 660, which is great. On a GPS thread a few months ago, some were using the Iphone as a GPS.

I use mine in the service area once in a while, when in the car and did not have the 660 with me. Not as good as the 660 , but more that usable.

What is a good GPS set up for the Iphone. I am assuming that the aps...........(there are many).........only work in the service areas.

What about out in the "middle of nowhere"?

I have TomTom. I have a preference for TomTom as I used the standard units right from the off. In fact, my first TomTom was on a PDA must be 5 plus years ago now.

I bought the TomTom app for Europe and then did a 2 week tour in the US in September. Bought the tomTom for that and I was very happy with it. The limitation of this app is hardly noticeable, if at all - but this is more than adequately compensated by the fact that I now only carry one device for EVERYTHING.

I was with a mate and when we were chatting over a beer or dinner after the days ride and planning the next days ride we would often use it as a planning tool.

If you do use it then powering it whilst you ride is an absolute must or you will run the battery down REALLY quickly.

One minor glitch is that you cannot control the screen with gloves on. I use a Ram Mount and bought one of the stylus's that work with an Iphone and that takes a lot of the hassle out. To a certain extent not being able to mess too much with it is also quite a good thing - forces you to pull over rather than trying to sort whilst riding

Default Iphone as an assistant, not quite GPS

I have used my IPhone 3GS using the mapquest app which shows your map position and moves as you move. Also using the WhereIs app I have found the nearest gas stations and foo foo coffee shops. The IPhone can get you out of trouble, as a lot of the time I am not lost, just a little off course. I did buy a Garmin 265WT for less than $150 which is Bluetooth capable, links to my IPhone so that incoming calls are displayed on the GPS screen, and you can dial from the GPS screen to send calls with the GPS built in speaker/mic. I put a RAM mount on my handlebars to hold the GPS and simply plug it into the cigarette lighter socket on the Street Glide fairing which is very near the GPS.

So you can use the IPhone as a kind of assistant, or go the way I did and now have a less than $200 GPS. Beats the $1K the dealer wants and I only am missing the integrated turn by turn announcement over the regular stereo. Again, not as elegant but it very much meets my needs. The IPhone is my backup device, and in BFE it isn't very useful, had trouble getting signals on I64 in West Virginia recently on the IPhone. I thought these were alternative ideas to Navigon which has a good rep too....

Great review on Navigon, screen shots pros and cons I've found nothing better as good or better than the one in my GM truck (On Star)
