Default Code Master Service Code Reader

Does this tool from HD do any more than can be done manually on the odometer?

Code Master Service Code Reader

Be prepared when you visit your dealer for service. Diagnostic code scanner easily retrieves trouble codes from your vehicle's computer to diagnose problems. The pocket-sized diagnostic code reader simply plugs into your bike's vehicle port, and automatically connects to the onboard computer. It reads the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and displays the DTC description on a bright LCD screen. The Code Reader Master allows you to clear codes with the touch of a button, and also lets you to double check the current calibration ID for your motorcycle. The Code Reader is powered by your bike when connected. Kit includes palm-sized reader, J1850 connection cord, and instructions. Available starting March 2010.
32312-10

For use on '02-'11 VRSC™, '07-'11 XL and XR, '02-'11 Dyna®, '01-'10 Softail®, and '02-'11 Touring models equipped with J1850 protocol On-Board Diagnostics information plug.
MSRP US $149.95

I bought one about 6 months ago.
Damn thing has yet to make it out of the packaging.
Your odometer can give you the codes as easily as this thing can.
If you INSIST on buying one...PM me, I'll hook a brutha' up!
Otherwise, save your money.

Left side cover.

EDIT: On a '08 that's where it's located.

I believe about the only other thing it would do is indicate what current download is in the ECM. Not worth it, IMO

There are times I've wished my Snap on red brick scanner would work with my bike, but really the built in code reader does almost as much anyway.

Default Scanner

I tried this one and as someone else said you can get the same info from the odometer. I finally bit the bullet and bought one of the MS5650 scanners. This tool is great, gets me all the info I need. Warning it is a little pricey, best price I got was from a company called Griffin Tools & Supply out of Illinois.

Talking Yes a little pricey!

It is an expensive piece of equipment but I work on all types of bikes and scooters and I have not found one it will not work with. I orginally bought just the HD and BMW cables but then quickly added the Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki cables. One of the better investments I've made.
