Thats funny i just called HD on the same issue. They told me over the last few years that a lot of women have been buying their motorcycles and were complaining of the hard to pull clutch handle, you probably got the spring with the pink paint on it you want the one with blue on it.
For my 2 cents, a good spring to go with is the stock 2003 and earlier big twin spring. You don't need to go with the extra pressure of the SE spring. If you're going above 120 ft. lbs. of torque, you might need something more.
Funny thing, my bike came with a product other than the HD in the primary.
When I changed all the fluids from a premium aftermarket brand to HD, and the + in the tranny and primary, the clutch became much more positive.
Stock 96" and I don't really hot rod around.
I have heavier clutches in other bikes, and I find this clutch to be pretty good- but I am amazed at the difference caused by the fluid.
I have used the easy boy lite clutch kit in my Evos for years, which is similar to H-D's current ball/ramp mechanism.
I do find that clutch rod and cable adjustments are more important than in the past
I have the stock spring with my TC96 with 255 cams, where torque is probably at 95-100#, and I am having no problems. Unless you're planning a more radical build where TQ exceeds 110 I would leave it alone and use a primary oil that is not full of friction modifiers. Cheap fossil engine oil works fine, as does HD's Formula+ and ATF, although the HD oil is obscenely expensive for what you get. If I do have any slipping issues in the future I'll probably go to the 98A spring, although I don't think it will be necessary. The SE spring is quite stiff by comparison and overkill for modest builds, IMO.
Someone posted this chart a while back:
37882-06 (117 KgF) 2006-88”, 2007 thru 2010-96” 37871-04 (135 KgF) 2004-05 88” and 2010 Limited 37871-98A (145 KgF) 1998-2003 37871-98 Obsolete part number, reportedly same as 98A above except cheaper. 37807-03 (165 KgF) 2007-10 103 ”Police" 37951-98 (175 KgF) Current SE
i'm also using the b&m trickshift in the primary and am happy with how it works. also i'm using the s.e. clutch spring, it came with my 103" package. the screamin eagle compensator made a big difference too.
