Default Quick modification for improved safety

Recently added the red lenses and turn-signal-running-lights plug-in to my 2005 Ultra. OEM had a single taillight with the additional two lights on the tour pack. With this add-on I now have the additional two taillights illuminated from the turn signals, and IMHO a significant improvement on the visibility scale. Plus, I like the look of all red lenses on the rear of the bike instead of the two orange "pucks" on each side of the taillight.

Maybe it is just me, and maybe it is a perceived increase in the reports I am hearing of motorcycles being rear-ended or other incidents related to visibility (or the lack thereof) but for the relatively minor investment in this modification, I went for it. Not sure why I waited so long...but it's done anyway. And what is interesting is that the guys with whom I ride have already commented on the increased visibility, especially at night -- and this without telling them what I did before they saw the bike.

Just a suggestion... And maybe it'll help one of you from being a statistic.

Drive safely -- and hope you are gearing up for a great Christmas!

The more lights the better. I did the same thing on my bike.

I've done this mod on all bikes I've owned. Especially those w/o Tour-pak lights.
One light is either difficult to see or impossible to get a feeling for speed of the vehicle.
Three running lights and three brake lights w/o having to bolt more lights onto your bike is cheap insurance. (I added the BAL-1 for good measure.)

Any pics?

More brake lights are a good thing compared to a single red light going from dim to bright to indicate stopping.

I bought a used bike that the original owner wanted his brake lights to be seen. These had standard filament bulbs and for $8 a bulb I replaced them with lower current draining, brighter LED bulbs.

Take a look at this array. Whatcha think?

I ride a Heritage and I can tell a big difference since I put the kit on my bike. Unless I get a real tool behind me most stay further behind me they they ever did before. I dont understand why two more red lights make suck a difference while traveling but they do.

That's why I added bright LEDs, have the run/brake tri-bar and also have the run/brake light on the airwing luggage rack on my bike. The stock light bulbs on my '10 SG are just way too dim. After replacing them with LEDs, I got comments that the bike was much easier to see, both in sun and at night.

With one light like on a Heritage drivers can't tell much about your speed or distance from them. With three they can discern movement and distance much better. The yellow rear signal lights are always off in the stock set-up (single filament). Not like the fronts which serve as marker lights and are always on (dual filament).

I've been ***-ended twice so far. First time 6k damage, last time about a month ago just a small scratch. Had the lights on the bike both times. I'd like the get the flashing strobes on the back like the sheriffs use. Maybe a grenade launcher next.

One of the first things I changed on my ultra. Well worth the fifty bucks to have two more red running lights lit up out back

I was rear-ended 20 years ago by a 16YO girl in a Mustang and have been paranoid ever since. I recovered but the bike was totaled. When stopping at a light or stop-sign I always check my rear and am always ready to move out onto the shoulder if someone approaches too fast.

On this bike I bought the Kuryakyn 4859 module which makes the turn signals running lights, turn signals, and brake lights. It also can be configured to pulse 4X/sec. for a few seconds, then constant bright during braking. The other day I was fooling around and accidentally shorted the left turn signal contacts at the tail-light harness and blew that section of the module. I removed it and was appalled at the lack of rear lighting in stock form. The tail-light was the only light for running and braking, the turn signals working only in that capacity. Pitiful. I have a new module installed now.

My stock SG facia light (below fender) quit working, too, and instead of replacing it with a stock item I bought the HD upgrade that works as a running and brake light. To my surprise it actually produces a respectable amount of light when braking, and every little bit helps. With all that additional light I feel better, but don't take anything for granted. I still watch my back.
