First, get yourself to the nearest H-D dealer and sit on all the different touring motorcycles in your price range to see how they fit. Remember, every touring bike is a Road King to start with, but they all have different handlebars and seats that will make a big difference. After that, it's all add ons and some engine upsizing on the Road King Classic, Road Glide Ultra and the E.G. Ultra Limited. If you're looking for comfort, bags, windshield for the lowest price, then the Road King might be the motorcycle for you.

Another idea to help in your evaluation is to rent the motorcycle you think you want. Try it out for a day. Or if you have a really cooperative dealer, rent one bike in the morning and bring it back at noon and rent another bike in the afternoon (two bikes with one 8 hour rental fee). I did that and it really helped. Of course that won't work now if you're in the northern part of the country.

Good luck in your quest

Hmmm. are you a guy or a gal? Short or tall? How much touring do you plan and what distances? RK all the way up the line will do well for any touring, but the amenties vary. Good advice here about renting a model you are attracted to.

1. the one you like
2. the one that fits your wants/needs

Do you want full fairing?
Do you want radio?
Do you need communication with other bikes?
Do you need intercom for two up riding?
Do you need extra storage for 2 up?
Do you want an ipod integrated?
Do you want/need removable windshield?
Do you want/need fixed fairing or fork mounted fairing
Do you want/need lower leg protection for cold/wet riding?
Do you want clean, classic, custom, or fugly look?
Do you need to stay under a certain price range?
Do want/need young girls or old ladies to like the bike?

Answer these questions and you'll soon zero in on a touring bike that works for you.

This may help you, i have an 07 EGC with lowers and take a 2 week vacation on it every year with my friends, then i take off the tour pack and have a dressed up street glide that handles wonderfully around town and on short rides, if i need the tour pack it takes about 5 minutes to put back on. You get the best of both bikes, an Ultra with everything and a Street Glide. jd

Just go ahead and get the Ultra, everybody ends up on one anyway.

My .02 is if I didn't want the stereo or the fairing I would go out and buy a Heritage Softail Classic. Now thats one comfortable ride.

Talk about an opened ended question. There are the bat wings, the shark noses and the road king for the classic look. You can spend a lot or a lot more. Are you riding two up or solo? Do you like you bikes fully loaded or more basic? There is no correct answer to your question. They're all good, just depends on what suits you best. And don't worry about getting a Harley racing tourer by mistake, Harley touring cycles are not racers; they go fast enough, but you're not going to win and races.
