So ABOS600 a lot of info to digest. I see you are new to the forum. Welcome. You'll quickly learn this forum offers alot of good info dispersed among alot of let's say, ancillary info. No matter what the question there are some answers that will be repeated. Some of them are listed below:

1. Don't consider a pre '09 motorcycle. This will always be submitted by someone that owns a '09 or later model.
2. Don't waste your money on a "new" '09 or later model. This will always be submitted by somone that owns a pre '09 model.
3. Get a good set of tools and do all of your own maintenance/modifications. You guessed it. This answer is always submitted by someone with the mechanical ability to perform all of his/her own maintenance/modifications and amkes the assumption you have any interest in doing same.

So yes, many of the posts are written more about the individual posting than about answering your question however if you look closely hidden among so many of these self serving posts you will find very valuable information.

My answer, Pass on the salvage bike. There are better deals available in your price range. I'd be less concerned about higher mileage than I would be a salvage title.

Good luck in your search.

Everybody keeps talking about better deals out there, well someone please show me a $5000 dollar RK that doesn't have a 100,000 miles on it. I say if you like the bike and it checks out go for it. It's already been said, but you could probably sell it in a few years for what you paid.

4. Pass on the salvage bike. It might not have been fixed correctly. I guess this answer must always come from the guy with no mechanical skills, or desire to learn them, and is afraid he might have to make repairs beyond his abilities.

good game, I'm sure we could keep a list like this going for some time. Problem is, it's just a bunch of assumptions and no practical advice.

...DING-DING-DING!...we have a winner..said it earlier..how the hell you gonna beat a 5000.00 Road King,(I'm assuming with cash in hand the seller will drop 500.00 on the deal)?..that's a "give-it away" price in my neck of the country. Can you imagine being on a run with a bunch of guys and you pull into the lunch diner parking lot next to a guy on a new RK, who paid $19,500 Out-the Door, and then spent 1500 more for a stage one, for about 21,000 total, and you tell him you paid $5000.00 for your Road King!!..c'mon..you KNOW that would feel good!

Holy ****,buy it for $5 grand, ride it for 5 years and you'll still get your 5 back outa it....over and over and o..v..e..r....
I know I'm goin back on what I said earlier, but then I kept thinking about it and reading the logics on this topic and well, quite frankly,I can do what the hell I want!

(just be sure to look it over real well, maybe take someone along who is a bit educated on what to look for, ride the bike, start, stop repeadedly a few times.Maybe there's an indy bike shop in the town that might look it over for you.)
I bought this bike several years back and only gave,I think,$6500.It came with the tourpac, lowers and some extra stuff in a box. When I saw it in the ad,it looked more 'mustard" colored and I didn't mind it but when I got there and saw YELLOW,I thought oh f...ck,but it grew on me,added the whitewalls, and had a blast. It ran really strong, stage 2,SnS carb and never let me down.

Who cares as long as you test ride it and it starts-runs smooth-and stops, at that price, and the next guy to buy it when you're done is gonna do it for the same reason you would buy it...a lot of bike for the price...sheesh..
It's kinda funny, really. Yet there are no shortage of guys willing to take a 8 to 10 thousand dollar bath when they trade in to get a newer bike. Good economics there.
