the dealer i got my streetglide from included quite a good tool pouch when i bought my bike. i am not sure that all dealers put a tool kit in the saddlebag, but with the 8 way screwdriver, made by snap-on, by the way, and the other stuff that came in the tool pouch, i'm not worried about roadside repairs. if a bulb burns out or most other small items, you're usually not far from a place you can get a replacement part.
I came across these storage pouches by Innovative Storage Solutions (www.storagepouches.com) that are designed to fit in the bottom wells around the molding voids in hard saddlebags. Ideal for carrying tools, emergency fasteners, first aid supplies, tire inflators etc... They also sell complete tool and first aid kits and have a list of items in the kits. I've also seen these pouches for sale on Ebay with favorable reviews.
I bought the Cruz set over the Winding because of the nylon case as oppose to the plastic Winzone. The plastic stuff always seems to get brittle and break up. I bought the big set so if there is trouble in a trip hopefully someone who is a better mechanic than I am can fix my bike!
After reading about the Storage Pouches, I decided to get a set for myself. It was a wise decision. I couldn't believe how much they hold. I put tools in the L-shaped pouches and divided my first-aid kit between the 2 straight ones. The nice thing is that they lay down in the voids in the bottoms of the saddlebags and take up very little room. If you're looking for something to carry lots of tools and stuff while simultaneously regaining space in your saddlebags these things are "da bomb".
I have a nice moco kit has a bunch of tools. Add a length of platic tubing to get gas off a petcock (carby), and I am good to go. One item I've thought about but not added is a voltage regulator. If that dies and yer in the boonies I don't care how handy you are with duct tape and baling wire - yer still fooked.
What do you guys use for inflation after patching a tire? It would be nice to have an onboard compressor...
I just took one of my cheap wal-mart compressor i had in the car and took it apart... all you need is the guts...i wrap it up in a old t-shirt i have help 2 people with it and my tire plug kit already...
For the early Evo FLT/FLHT I recommend taking a #0 Phillips screwdriver to take off the speedo trip reset ****. There's a wealth of potential electrical gremlins lurking under there.
