front & rear wheels different?

On touring bikes, how is the rear wheel different from the front wheel? Both are marked T16x3.000 DOT, both have 1" axles/bearings (2004+/-), both have 5 holes for rotors/drive pulley.

I know the tires are different, but what makes a front wheel a front wheel, and a rear wheel a rear on touring bikes?

Drive pulley bolts on the rear wheel are larger than the rotor bolts.

Rear wheel pulley side and brake rotor side have different offsets also.

different offset from center of wheel?

I see it now. Yeah, the offset is about 0.160" (+/-) larger on one side of the rear wheel than the other side. And, the bolt holes are just slightly larger on the pulley side, but on the same bolt circle. Tough to see by eye, but the measuring stick says they are different just as you (both) described.
