Held a broom in my hands where it felt fomfortable, wife measured from top of bar [by clamp] to top of broom; 16"? I'm 5' 6". I am pulling them back a bit for reach but this seams kinda long. what am I doing wrong?
Find someone with a set of 16s on their bike and sit on it and see what it feels like. I had 16s on my old road king and it was perfect, put 13s on the ultra because I did not want the bars sticking up too high over the fairing.
I have never looked at apes as being "cool", it is all about comfort to me. Shoulder pain went away when i went with the apes.
i had 20's on my road king custom, i liked them, and was comfy. until i rode from NC to Oregon a few times. my new road king, built for touring, has 12's...... and i am 6 ft 1in, 220lbs.... at 5'6", i would def consider how far i was planning on riding before i put 16s on there. like was said earlier, find someone with a setup similar to what you want (or think that you want) and throw a leg over it.
I'm 6' and my 12.5's are slightly below shoulder level and very comfortable on long rides (and mostly legal). I would think 16's would be to high given your height and an invite to a ticket where such things matter. Pic below is 18's on a Heritage. Guy that rides it is 6'4" and his hands are above his shoulders.
Short and fat will probably never look cool. I just need to bring them up and back.
Sitting back in seat leg position is good but feel like tyrannosaurus rex reaching for my bars.
6' and I could've went with 18's but my 16's are very comfy. I rode 23 hrs straight and wouldn't do it with any shorter bars, find somebodys bike you can sit on or your local dealer might have one of those sawhorse looking things you can try different parts on. Anybody who says apes aren't comfortable hasn't ridden with them or has only ridden a bike with ridiculously high apes. Good luck.
BTW my Carlini's were expensive but they are worth it, the chrome and bends are flawless.
I have 12 1/2 on my RG could have went with 14's but the 12.5 seems to be good -- I only put a 100 miles with them on--what ever bars you get be aware/check the pull back --
14's on my street glide, right at or a little above shoulder level. 5'8 and have average reach, i think at 5'6, unless your knuckles drag the ground when you walk, 16 may be a little high. JMO.
i had 16" wildone chubbys which were extremely comfortable. i just installed 16" carlini gangsta's. i am 6'1 and I too could easily do 18's which would be be a over my shoulders quite a bit but still comfortable. I stayed with 16's for the trips to to states with height requirement and because i run a detatcable fairing and didnt want my bars towering over my fairing.
