I have a 105th Anniversary, 2008 Road Glide. Yesterday at the beginning of a ride it started backfiring and sputters at any speed. Before yesterday it ran fine on any past rides. It will not maintain a steady speed. I replaced both the stock Harley spark plugs 6R12 (gap .40), it still performs the same. I am contemplating the old process of elimination by replacing the recently new (about 1000 miles), heavy duty Harley spark plug wires or the Harley Ignition Coil. I should mention, the bike was washed a couple of days ago and water 'may' be a factor but it has been washed and MasterBlaster air dried in this same way many times and this has never happened before. I should also mention, it has sit for about a month. I don't get to ride as much as I used to. It has 5300 original miles on it since I bought it new in 2008. I will also mention it has a Fuelpack and a set of Vance And Hines 'True Duals' on it. I had this entire setup put on by Vance And Hines last year (2009), at Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach. When I removed the plugs, the front one looks normal to me but the rear cylinder plug is pure black (photos below). I'm trying to avoid bringing it to my local Harley dealer if at all possible, due to the cost and distance they are from my home. If anyone has experienced this problem (Any Mechanics Out Their???), please let me know what you suggest that will correct this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did your engine light come on? If it did, there's codes that pin-point your problem without having to swap parts out.
No, the engine light never came on the whole time. Even after I stopped, shut it off, looked at it and let it cool a minute, then rode it back home. I too was thinking of that exact thing but it never did it.

Do what Faast Ed said and check back in with the results.
Becareful the pins on the V&H fp can be easly dammaged and cause more problems. I had the issue were I bought my bike used it had a stage 1 didnt know got the V&H fp set it for stock the bike ran hot and sputtered. reinstalled the pak to stage one settings. the bike didnt get hot but still sputted and farted here n there. removed the pac the bike was good to go. Sold the V&H fuel pak to a buddy he tried to install the pak the led's came on started to set the settings. The led's went blank, contacted V&H, I shipped back the tuner. Recived a email from V&H that a pin in the conector was bent. Even by me putting a flash light to the conector I could not tell the pin was bent. Works great on his bike now
Ever had the fuel filter canister recall taken care of? And is that 5300 original miles or 53000? If 53000, have you had the fuel filter replaced? Check the fuel regulator too.
