Had to remove mine for the backrest install. The "trick" is to remove the bolts, lift the cover up a little (about 20 degrees), then wiggle it as you push it towards the front of the bike. It's easy enough to say, but after you get it off once it will all make sense and be easier the next time.
Ok I did try the "search" to no avail. I have a FLHTK and I cannot figure out how to remove the cover. I take the 2 bolts out of the backside and remove the electronics boxes on top. I cannot see how to get the front side of the cover unhooked. I do have the service manual and it says "Remove Cover" DAH.
Thank you so much everyone as I too had no luck with the battery cover until I read these very useful and helpful mesages. All's well that ends well!

First off i am somewhat mechanically challenged but this is what i figured out.
sorry for my hen scratch. After removing the seat and the 50 amp fuse i did the following.
1: Lightly pry off ECM from caddy
2: Unplug #2
3: HFSM antenna. It looks like a plug but it is just sitting in a rubber holder. This is where i was making my mistake. It has to be pulled out along with the rubber holder. Once it is out the caddy can easily be removed from over the battery after you unscrew #5
4: cut the cable straps
5: unscrew caddy holder
6: the hold down may not be visible but can only be done after your remove #3
