Tried to use these on an Ultra. Bought them on eBay. There isn't a lot of room to work and couldn't turn the wrench to tighten the nut onto the threads. Turned the threaded part of the light into the nut and twisted off the wires from all the roatation. Ended up buying the license bracket with the LED lights and it worked fine.
I use a pair of license plate bolt LED's and they are fine. At night they are really bright and light the plate just fine, I've never had any issues with the police at all.
Harley Davidson Braided Bullet Rear Turn Signal Bar and License Plate Relocation Kit
P/N 53702-04A It bolted right up to my 2011. When researching I noticed that there is a Road King turn signal bar which the flat bar style that puts the license plate beneath the the turn signal bar with light. I'm sure you can order one through your Harley parts store.

I'm aware of bullet kit and it is nice but I'm trying to avoid spending $250 on this project plus I think I would need to add the matching front signals to make it look right.
The Road King bar is for 2009 and later bikes. My 2008 fender is narrower than the '09.

The parts for the RK light bar is around $200 retail.I'm not 100% sure, but I think it will fit pre-09 bikes.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I went to the dealer today and decided that I like the Street Glide bar look, so I'm going to bite the bullet and buy that kit. Of course next week I'll decide that I just have to have the front ones as well.
I used two LED 'bolts' from Dennis Kirk, about 25 bucks, shipped. They are at both upper corners of the plate. You can read it from a few feet, but beyond that it's hard because the embossed numbers on the plate cast shadows. This could be overcome probably by spacing the bolts out away from the plate. I just left them the way they were. I had to purchase two sets. One of the first ones failed (came un-soldered internally due to putting too much stress on the wires). I killed it trying to re-solder. Also, the light of the second pair is bluer than that of the first pair. If you're OCD, you're not going to like the difference. Me, I'm a slob, and don't care. But there's a difference in hue among 'batches', or maybe even individual sets.
Here's one more idea. These guys have a small LED license plate light assy LPC-W2 for $6. You may be able to fabricate a clip type mount so it hangs over top of your Softbrake plate. http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...LPC.htm#photos
