I just got my fix my hog videos and watched quite a few of the procedures and they seemed pretty well explained. The only mechanical thing I have done on my bike is to check the cam tensioners, and the only reason I attempted that as opposed to bringing it into a dealer, was because of the detailed info on this site. When I watched the fix my hog people do the cam chain tensioner check, they did not bother to even lift the cams off the chain. The outside one looked OK-you could see it had very little wear. The inside tensioner, which is pretty much seeable only with a lighted dental mirror, was barely mentioned ,with an offhand comment that it was harder to check. Considering that the inside tensioner could cause catastrophic engine failure, I was kind of disappointed that they only gave it such a brief mention. The extra time it takes to do a thorough check of both tensioners is minimal compared to the time it takes to get the cam cover off.
Do their other procedures gloss over critical stuff like this? I figure between the owners manual, the videos and the forums, I'll have most the basis covered on the simpler things. I'm still a little disappointed that the check of the cam tensioners in the videos did not seem thorough. What does anyone else think?
