Very fine job of putting those together. I have a feeling you enjoy music on the road too. Very nice work putting those together and fitting them in flawlessly.
Did you use some type of form, or preformed fiberglass pods to design these?
I really like the 6 speaker sound system on your ride, very sweet.
The best sound I've heard on a stock Harley was a 2008 FLHTCU I rented. It was like riding inside of a speaker with all around, surround sound.
I upgraded my system and speakers and have a pair of grills with the stock leftover Harley speakers I've considered flush mounting in the tour pack. I'm worried about cutting into the tour pack and whether or not it may cause leaks and cracks down the road.
This Ebay seller offers virtually every possible speaker pod:
1. 6.5" pod,
2. 5.25" old and newer style (though I'm not sure about what the difference is,
3. speaker pods for chopped tour paks, and
4. speaker pods for the Premium Leather tour pak used on the '06 and '07 CVO Ultra tour paks (which are different than those used on the plastic/fiberglass King/Ultra tour paks.
Although I didn't buy pods from this seller, he did recover a pair of the CVO premium leather pods and did an outstanding job.
I checked the HD website and only seeing the pods with speakers kit.
What I have done (twice, so far) was to watch eBay. I found damaged speaker pods that had the upholstery torn with no speakers. They sell for very little because everyones wants the "Plug N Play" type.
I then go to a seller on eBay that specializes in upholstery. It is called June's Upholstery. I buy replacement upholstery for the speakers. They are pre-fit and look/fit good. I save a lot of money.
I hope to not derail this thread, but with all the discussion, I am left wondering what "surround sound" would be like on mine. I have an '08 E-Glide (FLHTC I believe) ...anyway its got the Harmon Kardon CD system. What kinda work would it take to install & hook up rear speakers.
I'd bet the H/K head unit you have was designed for up to a 4 speaker system. Not certain but guessing you already have the trunk. Quite possible the wiring harness is there.
It would seem like tracking down the correct wires would be a start. Then picking the pods that fit best and selecting the right sized speaker.
The system on the FLHTCU was only 4 speakers. Sincecrazy added two to the highway bars also, could be just subs.
And the better sounding systems, no matter how many speakers, typically use an additional amp.
I'm blown away by the prices for sound equipment specific for cycles / Harleys. Amp and additional speakers installed can run up over a grand, or two. And if you have an intercom/ headset, or bluetooth addition it get's complicated.
I was looking closely at those pods and saw a pair with a wood design covered in fabric. I won't be adding an amp. My after market head unit has a good volume. So I may just "box" up my current speakers to fill in more sound.
I'd love to add subwoofers, on the highway bars would be the spot. Subs would require all the xtras like power amps and crossovers to make them work right.
And personally I'd never cut into my saddlebags or mount them to a lid system. They seem to put speakers any which way just to blast sound.
Hogtunes has a kit called Ultrasound that includes the pods, speakers and amp so you can run the rears off the Harmon head and the front speakers off the amp. No reprogramming of the harmon unit or such needed by the dealer if you were to convert the harmon from a 2 speaker unit to 4 speaker unit. If going to pay for fake pod might as well spend a little more jiggle and get a sound upgrade to go along with the pods.
thanks everyone for the replies. I forgot to state that I have a FLHT that I added a biketronics Sony stereo to that I rarely ever use. I don't really think that I'd use the tourpak speakers but would like the option of adding them later. Hopefully I will be able to find someone who took off their OEM pods and can get them at a good price. I want the pods more for cosmetics and added comfort when my wife or daughter is on the bike.
I am adding a King Tourpak to my 09 FLHT and want the Tourpak speaker pods for look only, I have no interest in adding speakers at this time. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase the pods separately? I checked the HD website and only seeing the pods with speakers kit.
