Default Rear pulley wear

Pulled the wheel to change tire and noticed large chips of chrome missing on the rear pulley. Had a dyna for almost 8 years with 40000 miles on it without ever changing the rear pulley. The FLHT have only 20000 miles on it.

Do remember from my dyna manual, which I left with the cycle when it was sold, that there were pictures warning about the condition with the missing chrome. Looking in my FLHT manual I can't find pictures like that.

Is the condition shown here alarming = new pulley ?. Always replacing things before it gets serious hate to be 2000 miles from home with a failure.

That just looks like the chrome plating is wearing away. There's alot of friction on the teeth of that pulley. I would think that it's pretty common. Check your belt and see if it's showing any signs of wear.

Mine looks the same way but I haven't had any problem with the belt.

Don't forget. If you replace the pulley, you should replace the whole line.
Pulley, belt, and primary sprocket. It can be expensive.

I noticed the same condition on 04 egc, not too concerned belt looks fine. Things wear, anyone got to the point where it became an issue and how many smiles did you go before replacing?

Losing the chrome will not cause a problem. Feel the cogs on the pulley. If they are squared off and getting edges on the teeth, replace immediately. I learned this lesson the hard way with a nice billet pulley. Breaking a belt at speed is no fun.
