Default Removing CAT

Lots of threads about this. Right now, I have access to a free header with a CAT. I am going to cut it in half (at the CAT) clean it out then weld it.

My question is this: Should I take into account the 1/4 inch I lost cutting the pipe or will it adjust out at the slip-ons?

Thanks,
Cale

You shouldn't lose anything at all. The saw blade will take at most 1/8 " The Welder should leave a gap for the filler rod.

Default Not to worry

The slip on will give you at least a 1/4" to play with

Not a professional welder but I dont see how you could leave a gap when welding thin mat'l.
The width of the cut can be minimized by using a band saw.Butt it up and tig weld.

+1 the thinner the cut blade the better you'll be, if your on the base you might find somebody with a laser cutter, that would be the ticket

i used a band saw to cut mine, and didn't worry about the material loss when welding it back together. there is plenty of room for adjustment where the slip on mounts.

You should at least talk to a professional welder. You never want to butt solid against anything. Heavy pipe or thin exhaust pipe. The reason they keep a small gap, maybe 1/16 in a case like this, so the filler rod can penetrate and fill like it's designed too. If you don't leave a space for the filler rod to penetrate, Then the weld will probably crack.
