Default I need help chosing cams for my TC88

I am so confused!!! I have searched via the search function, and I'm not sure what cams are good for the 88, most of my results are showing for the 96.

So, I am going in to either change my tensioner pads (probably what I will do) or debating about the tensioner upgrade (I ride about 7K/year and a pad change will give me many years without worry)

I ride solo most of the time, usually ride two lane mountainous back roads, but do ride the freeway sometimes. I do not wind out the RPM's so low to mid range is what I'm after. I am also after a better lugier sound at idle.

My dealer recomended SE 203's, but a lot on this board say they are to mild.

So I have a number of questions, please answer as many as you can:

1. What are my cam options for a TC88 bolt in (no compression upgrade)

2. If I choose to spend the money on the hydroloic tensioners will it change my cam options?

3. When doing the install will the 1-ton harbor freight arbor press be suffient to press on the bearing?

4. or should I buy the 6-ton bench press?

5. I do not have the following specialty tools that are required to do this job:
a. bearing remover and installer
b. Crank/Cam locking tool
c. Cam chain tensioner tool
Are theses must haves, or can I get away with using something else.

I am trying to figure out how much this will cost me to do the install myself. If the tools I have to buy is close to or exceeds the labor costs, I will pay the dealer to do it. I enjoy doing my own work, and like to learn about my machine, so I'm hoping I can install these cheaper myself.

6. I need the Timiken Bearings Part number

Thanks!!

This is going to sound ridiculous, but here it tis. I have ordered a 120r for my bike as have many on this forum. You might find a low milage 96 or 103 for a good price and get a more powerful engine in lieu of a cam change.

Yes, it does sound ridiculous because... unfortunately, the 96 and 103 takeouts from 2007 and up bikes do not bolt into our earlier bikes like the OPs 2006 and my 1999

My opinion; S&S 510 or Andrews 26.

keep it simple. either the andrews 21 or 26 will do you good. either one can be used easlily with the new tentioners or gear drive and come as kits from various sourses. the 26 is a good all round, and the 21 will give you better, quicker low end response and tourqe.

Default S and S 510 or Andrews TW37 gear drive.

I have the 37 in my FLHR 95 inch that was 88 with same cams. 510G almost the same. Had it in my 88 inch fatboy with stock top end. Skip the plate upgrade and go with gear drives. Don't need much press power. S&S has little more duration as I recall.

a lot off people like the 204's with the 88". maybe cyclerama's 575. I like that cam in my 95. I'm sure it will work well in an 88''. I don't like the gear drives personally. the hydro plate works nice and it's quit.
