THIS IS A HARLEY-DAVIDSON OFFICIAL NOTICE:
Your Warranty is Voided, effective immediately.

Our secretly located synthetic oil sensor has reported this violation. If you feel this is an error, put Syn3 oil in the engine and all will be restored. ANY OTHER SYNTHETIC WILL TRIGGER AN AUTOMATIC DESTRUCT SEQUENCE.

As somebody else said, what you need to change is your mechanic.
There's tons of opinions on the subject, but most of the opinions are not based on any facts.

I don't claim to have a diffinitive answer for you, just my own experiance:

I changed my '00 Road Glide to synthetic (all 3 holes) at 1,000 miles. I have used HD syn3, Mobil ! V-Twin. Mobil 1 car oil, and a few other brands of 20-50 synthetic. I have 112,000 miles on it now, and it still runs great. Might use a couple ounces between changes. Never had the heads off, Gear drive cams put in at 57,000 miles, and that's it for repairs.

Seems like some people overthink a simple issue. Use a good oil, synthetic if you live in a hot climate, change it every 4-5,000 miles and don't worry about it.

[QUOTE=deadhawg;7803264]As somebody else said, what you need to change is your mechanic.

A huge +1 and an Amen to that.
Besides, doesn't everybody already know that synthetic oil is far too slick for an HD motor? All of the bearings will just slide and cause flat spots in the races resulting in premature something or other.....

Believe what you want. It doesn't make a hill o' beans one way or the other. Years ago HD used to bad mouth synthetic oil and say that it had too much "skate action" for your motor and was hard on your motor and came out with the "will void your warranty crap."

I used the http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm to break in my bike and changed my dino over at 2k. I have no problem using syn and going back to using dino oil either. So many wives tales and supersistions about these antequated air cooled motors it is ridculous.

Changed over to Mobil 1 v-twin at roughly 1000 miles, give or take 40 or so miles . At 16K now with no problems.
Do it and forgeddabowdit

I guess I'm lucky. My odo read 1002 when I switched to Royal Purple motor oil.

Anyway, It's been going good for the last 45,000 miles and no smoking or adding oil between changes.

i tryed syn oil in my 01 eg,it ran hot, was really noisy, and when hot the oil gauge dropped to nothing at idle..now it knocks at start up if it sits a while..200 miles and i changed back to dino..harley said absolutely no syn oil till they started selling it..think some one made a bad purchase at the moco, now they are stuck selling under contract..engines were around for 100 years before syn was invented, never had a problem then..

You shoulda' known better, man.

We'll change anything into an oil thread. Failing that we shoot for chaps, fingerless gloves, helmets or Fox Creek jackets.

You're welcome.
