Default AGH! Engine Noise?

Ok so last night as I got home (thankfully) I start to hear this odd "klunking-rattling" noise. So its late & I just shut it down.

Today I back it out the garage start it up & wait... no noise, odd then a few more minutes go by still no clunks or grinding nothing. Oil starts to heat up oil pressure starts to drop down as it sits. I have one of those dig temp oil caps. Was constantly checking it and about the 135deg I started to hear that same noise. I shut it down once more, wife who is out with me helps me pin point the noise seems to be the front lower left side of the motor.

Push the bike back in & notice I'm leaking just a little fluid. Primary side & its not oil at least what I use (royal purple) So i look at the primary & run my fingers along the seam & sure as ...$%^* there is a fresh primary fluid.

So I pull the primary cover.. Nothing!?? no issues at all no shards of metal, no busted chains, broken teeth off the sprockets. No odd smells either so its not the stator is the guess at the moment.

Replace the gasket & refill the primary....

So what does that leave me to look for .. I'm thinking the cam chain tensioner(s)? I was told that it had been done at a Indy shop before I bought the bike. Thinking I better check.

The bike before ran like a champ.. Odd issue is once the oil gets warmed up then you get that noise.

Its really a horrible noise too, no something you just toss under the noisy motor label.

Anyone have any ideas & yes the oil level is full & new. I'm going to drain it tomorrow to see if there are any signs of issues.

Basic Bike info:
2000 Ultra Classic (peace officer SE)
Bought fresh from the dealer (used) with all paper work history of required
"H-D" maintenance at the recommend intervals. Nothing about a Indy shop.
(Bike was very well cared for)
High miles though 90k
The motor is stock.

Thanks as always

Good luck... Wish I could offer some insight but correctly diagnosing a noise without actually hearing it doesn't seem too likely to me.

you might try using a piece of 3/8" or half inch dowel holding it near the suspected area of the motor cases/covers. hold the one end of the dowel to your ear, and the other end to the motor. it's an easy way to find noises, although the noise can telegraph through the metal and make it a little tough to find. the noise will be louder the closer you get to the source of the noise though. try it, it's an old trick and it works. how did the adjuster shoe look for the primary chain? the nylon or whatever was used for the slipper shoe for the primary chain tensioner might be worn out with that many miles on it.

+1 on the compensator. those years had an issue with the compensator nut. my 04 flhrsi had a similar noise, in a similar location to what you described. dont quote me on the #s, because i dont wanna BS you, but i cant research it from afghanistan, but, the factory spec had that nut at like 100 ft pounds (????) and they recalled it, and the service techs would retorque it to like 155 ft pound (????). and, if you havent upgraded to the SE compensator yet, that would be a good time. worth a check.

if not, then the chain tensioner is a good place to check as well. i had a belt changed in alabama in june 2010. the mechanic there kinda sucked, but he talked a good game. when he reassembled my primary, he neglected to put loctite, or torque down the 2 bolts holding the chain tensioner in place. they fell out, while i was in oregon...... fixed it in a parking lot in idaho, but the damage was done, and i broke down in utah....... the pics are in my gallery. sucked. bad. but, anything in the primary rattling, is NOT GOOD!

hope this helped, at least point you in the right direction,
corb

+1 on the compensator. That noise you describe is just like my 2010 sounds. 2011 they started using the SE compensator,

I would check & make sure that the trans. output shaft is not leaking. If it is the fluid will drip between the eng. & primary cover as my 2000 RG did. I also had the compensator nut loosen slightly on the wifes 1200 Roadster causing it to make some pretty nasty noises until I retorqued it. Good luck!

Problem is that it could be anything. You are going to have to do some searching or take it in to someone and let them do it. Could be a loose compensator, sloppy primary chain, cam chain, worst case would be crank pin bearing has begun to go out and your pistons are slapping around. Hate to say but with 90k on the engine and not knowing how hard it was ridden, you may be in need of a overhaul. Hope it's something simple for you. Good luck on it.
