a bench vise to break the bead and tire spoons...just did my last set and I am passing the torch oops I mean the spoons on to someone younger...gonna just pay next time.
Can anyone post a picture and describe how to use 2x4's to break the bead? I've done semi tires by hand I figure I ought to be able to do a scootr tire.
Harbor Freight tire changer (item # 34542), Harbor Freight motorcycle wheel adaptor (item # 42927) if you can find it, Marc Parnes wheel balancer at marcparnes.com, the MOJOLEVER at home.comcast.net/~prestondrake/mojoweb.htm, a set of rim protectors, three good tire irons, a good rubber mallet, & some tire weights. Cost is around $300 +/-. You save that in two tire changes. The Harbor Freight changer has a bead breaker built in.
I used to use spoons, cut up milk jugs or 2 liter bottles for rim protectors and balance them between 2 saw horses.
I have upgraded to the HF tire changer (comes with a bead breaker) and wheel balancer with MOJO lever and MOJO blocks. It works but I did bend the MOJO lever. If I was buying another lever it would probably be a No-mar.

Don't know what others do, but I put 2x4s about a foot long on both sidewalls next to the rim then tighten down on them with a c-clamp.
Last summer3 buddies and myself went together and bought a decent changer, has a balancer included and no mar attachmets. We got tired of paying the local guy here more than what we thought was a fair price. We poured a small concrete pad and bolted it down. We'll change anyones tires for cheap BUT they gotta take the wheel off. That's for a liability issue. It's a NoMar motorcycle tire changer and I think we paid around $8-900 for it. www.nomartirechanger.com/
I bought a Cycle Hill tire changer and so far have practiced on a couple of old sporty tires I had. It works great. I was paying about $75 in labor for each tire plus about $50 more for the tires than I can buy them online. Now I will be able to do them all myself plus I can service my wheel bearings as well. I may try to do car tires next.
