Default HCC Pre-wired or Basic sets?

Excuse my ignorance on this, and I have searched the site. I have verified type, size, etc.. BUT....
So I'm about to pull the trigger. Hill Country Customs has a CycleSmith 13in pre-wired set for $799 versus a basic kit for $479.
So my question to those that have done this, which is the best way to roll? Do you have to run the wires internal or is just for looks?
If it matters, not sure if I will be installing myself or having local shop.
thanks

I am at a similar stage in the game and here is how I personally feel about it.

-Order just the bars you want first, do a dry fit and get EXACTLY the right size cables for your application.

-Wires should always be run inside, it just looks cheap if you don't.

-Do all the work yourself, the $$$ you save could be applied to other goodies and/or tools.

-I am definatley not an HD expert but I cannot believe that HCC can sell the same quality controls as the OEM for the listed price. That being said my bike will keep HD controls unless there is a specific reason to change "ie..asthetics"

I just ordered my 16" WOC's last night. When I get the bars in I will be test fitting, measuring, and ensuring that I like the dimensions of those specific bars before I order extended wires, riser bushings, and cables. Just my 2 cents!!

This is from HCC website. YOu are not getting controls with their kit only the proper length cables.

You will not find a more complete ape hanger package anywhere. This kit includes everything you need to put apes on your bagger, except for the labor. We use these same parts to put apes on bikes in our shop, so we definitely know what you need to pull it off. This kit is for any Harley bagger model with batwing fairing 1997-2007. You will be getting a set of 1 1/4 inch FAT 12 inch Hill Country Custom ape hangers ( Made by us ) with all of the stainless cables and brake lines in the correct lengths and the correct EZ-Wire wiring extension kit for you handlebar wiring harness. The handle bars do reduce in size to 1 inch at the riser clamp and the grip ends to accept stock controls and risers. The bars are also pre-drilled for internal wiring.

Unique contours allow handlebars to fit Electra Glides, Street Glides, Ultras and Standards etc. without any modifications to the fairing

12 in ( 1 1/4 in diameter, 37 in width, 8.5 in pullback, 15.75 in center width )

Black or Stainless Steel Braided cables are pre calculated based on your specific application so they will be the correct length for your bike. They have chrome plated ends and plastic armor coat over the stainless braid to keep from scratching your paint, and to keep the stainless looking good for a long time. They are also teflon coated on the inside for extended wear.

Incorrect my friend the $799 kit that the OP is asking about includes controls already hooked up and wired.

The $479 kit is just the cables and wires

Thanks for correcting me I didn't see that they had a kit with controls (right next to the one I looked at). Looking over the rest of their site I see the only controls they sell are Ness for $300.00. So my guess is you are getting Ness controls with the handlebar kit just adding the items up.

Just put my HCC 16" ape's on last week,(Well me and a buddy) They come with the control buttons. For 90.00 extra bucks they will put the plugs on the wires. Truly a plug and play item. Just have to run the new cables they provide. I'm very happy with HCC package. Give them a call, They are very helpfull and will answer all your questions.

I got my 16's from them with braided cables and wire extensions. Then I went to ebay and bought chrome controls and switch housings for way less and they are great quality. I also put a pre wired kit with controls and plugs on my fatboy. Its totally up toyou but I did the same setup on my road king for about100 less by buying controls seperate. I
have to say though, the prewired kit was WAY easier on the fatboy. Extending wires and putting them in bars was a huge pain the ***

Thanks for the info.
I am a pretty low tech, no flashy kinda rider. I am thinking about saving the $320 from the "pre-wired" setup and go with the basic kit with 1"dia. bars then just zip tie the black wires to the black handlebars with black zipties and let the black fairing do it's job of obscuring this setup. The way I figure it, the wires on my stock shiny handlebars are ziptied and it hasn't bothered me yet. Not fancy, but it works.
Again, thanks

I just did a set of 1-1/4 apes on my 02 RK for a total price of about 450 including new 1 piece top riser clamp from HD. I ordered the cable kit from HCC and it was right on the money! 325 shipped with wire extentions. Job took me a solid day to do start to finish in 20 degree garage. Got the 1-1/4" bars from a seller in MO off of Ebay for 77 bucks. Enclosed the picture. Its up to you what you feel your skills are, but the pre wired sets arent that great a deal if you know what your doing, but theres something for everyone if you look hard enough.
