Default Detachable fairing: paint???

Looking real hard at fairings for my road king right now and was wondering how hard it is to get it ready for paint. I know Dragon fly and Dead center will paint them for you for an extra cost, is it worth letting them do it or can you take the radio and speakers out with ease so you can have your local painter do it??? I know Woodys and Hoppe are also options I am looking at but dont believe you can get them painted by them??

If it were me, I'd spend the extra and have them painted before I got them. If you can paint, or know someone that can/will for a good price, then go that route.

You'll probably get the best bag for the buck getting it painted by the mfg. Finding a local painter that does quality work for a good price can be hard.

I've had a couple of things painted locally and I would not go back to them.

If you have to get it painted locally contact your dealer for recommended painters. They have already weeded through them and found someone that is ready to work with harley colors a quality.

Dead Center here. Just thought I'd way in on the pros and cons.

Having it painted before hand is by far the most hassle free way to go, since the fairing will then be assembled and shipped completed. However, if you are really looking at saving a buck, many of our customers simply remove the front half (no components are attached to the outer fairing half) and have it painted, while leaving the inner portion the gloss black gel coat. That saves you from having to deal with disassembling the brackets and stereo components, while still getting a finished look.

That said, gel coat will not be as strong a finish as a good paint job. But, the inner portion of the fairing will not see the same elements related to ware that the outer would.

Food for thought. Good luck!

How good of a paint job does Dead Center do? Can they match up to factory colors and pinstriping?

I've got the Dead Center, and they are a great bunch of folks to work with. That said, it's a snap to remove the outer and have it painted. I had to do that to match my flame setup. I've heard nothing but good things about their products and customer service. Talk to them, you'll get better input than a random question about their products and quality. They DO stand behind their stuff. I know that from dealing with them!

To answer Cheeze's question, yes, we do match factory colors with the acception of "Dragonfly Green" (due to the "flop" not being QUITE perfect). We don't do the paint ourselves but instead use a local painter that has worked with local HD dealers for years on repairs and custom components needing matching paint. They are a great shop that I highly recommend. They're called Big Fatys and can be found here: http://www.bigfatys.com/ .
