Stealing an idea.

Is there a downside to this?

There isn't any reason you can't do the same thing other then the talent required to do it that way.

Short of that talent I believe you can just by covers that slip over or clamp on your existing pipes to get the same look.

I like option #1 better of course but it isn't always possible.

I like option 1 as well.
That being said, doing away with the left side pipe wont be detrimental to the motor at all?

Roadhouse built and sold exhaust systems that were pretty similar to the ones that guy made for his bike but I went to their website and read that they've closed shop. Here's a link to youtube and the ones I am talking about. If interested, you might try ebay to see whether anyone has a set for sale. They'd look great on a RKC.

Thanks
Checking eBay, it looks like a lot of metric pipes. I'll keep an eye out

Going 2 in to 1 won't hurt your motor. In fact a Vance and Hines Pro Pipe or a Thunderheader 2 in to 1 can and will increase horse power and engine performance.

You can find a Vance and Hines Pro Pipe without the shields for short money on bulletin boards, craigslist, e-bay, flee market or swap.
