IGNITION!!! Everything is up and running and what a feeling of satisfaction and relief.

I had the starter out and took it apart. I ran a few resistance tests outlined in the service manual and determined the starter was ok. I reinstalled the starter and it still would not work. As 03DragonRK recommended I bridged the two connections with some good thick wire and the starter kicked right in. .

With the starter and battery ruled out, I checked the electircal schematics in the manual and traced the fault to a loose terminal in the back of the fuse box. I think this one is on me because when I "cleaned up" some wiring for my amplifier I removed and reinstalled the very same terminal to give me some room to work. The terminal was in the fuse box but it somehow got jammed up before it seated correctly.

Fortunately this whole process only cost me an hour and a half. Now I get to return an unopened starter and get my money back!

The engine runs perfectly. The oil pressure came right up and the valve train is quiet. No leaks, no issue, and did I mention the Rinehart TD's sound bad ***? I'll put all the odds and ends back on in the next day or two. I hope the weather clears soon so I can take a ride.

No need for a disclaimer or apology man. You're doing a great job with your write-ups. I know I could never have the patience to take all those pics while wrenching and doing a lengthy write-up afterward. For one thing my hands are always too damn greasy to handle a camera. You show everyone here who might want to undertake a project like this but has reservations because they aren't highly technical that it can be done by an average guy that is willing to read, research and take his time. We all learn through you sharing your experience.

On Edit: CONGRATS on getting her running. Well done. Told you it wasn't the starter. ;-)

I didn't feel like I was getting slammed as much as I was getting pretty aggrevated with myself. I probably needed some of my wife's stash of Midol. Regardless, there are some great people here that are a lot more experienced and have more mechanical ability than I have. I'm not looking to be the expert. I just want to enjoy the learning experience of the projects and take pictures for you guys!

Train...

Kick *** man! Congrats on getting her running! See...it was something simple!

And you owe no apologies to anyone! I had your entire write-up on cam replacement with me last weekend when I did my Wood 555 install! Your stuff was side-by-side with my Service Manual the whole way! If I had a complaint that you needed to apologize for it would be about the focus on some of those early pictures! LOL! Tell your 'duty photographer' I am kidding!

Let us know when you get her out on the road! And thanks so much!

Steve

Great pictorial and write-up again. Just curious, using the SE dogbone rachets for the rocker assembly and cover, how were you able to get the right torque since the space is so tight and probably not room for a full sized torque wrench?

Thanks! I torqued by hand. Once you use the torque wrench on the accessable bolts you get a general idea on how much pressure to use. The torque values are fairly low so you don't have to use any muscle.
