Ceramic head pipe..............
looking for info. on advantage of ceramic header pipe. I assuming reduces heat, if so, how much?. Fuelmoto offers a HTC cermaic head pipe. I would to hear from you guys that are running with it.
Go to the FM website and you can see a video showing temperature measurements along the muffler. Then contact or email Jamie at FM for more info. There is also a lot of dialogue here on the forum regarding the FM stainless header, and also the new ceramic coated header.
I got my FM 2:1 header before they started offering the coating. I had it coated by Swain Tech with their White Lightning, a true ceramic. I chose them because they are supposed to be the best. It does work well; I was very satisfied with the heat reduction felt on my leg. Although I'm basically happy with the product, I would not recommend them; I wasn't happy with the customer service, turn around time, and I was somewhat disappointed in the finish. The finish looks sort of like the fake snow in a spray can that you frost windows with, mostly white with a hint of silver, but very tough, wont chip or scratch. It took over a month to get it back. I prepaid return shipping, but instead of using my return slip, they charged me return shipping and sent it to the ups shipping center where I originally shipped from, instead of shipping to the house, I also had to pay a pick up service charge; throughout the process of engaging this issue with Swain Tech, they maintained the error was somehow my fault, and blew me off. They also did not follow my very specific masking guidance, or contact me to explain masking issues; they just did it their way and I found out when I got the pipe back. Anyway, back to coatings. I don’t have a before and after temp value, because I didn’t run the pipe before coating and I have changed the tune. I just fired the bike up and let it idle for 5 min; checked the front pipe directly in front of the head flange, 640F max, then by the floorboard, 445F, this was on the pipe not the heat shield. (I had to run to the store real quick, I checked as soon as I stopped moving but still running at idle, 500F and 300F at the same points) This is just a quick test for reference not making any claims. I can only attest to the performance of Swain Tech’s White Lightning, but I’m sure the coatings used by FM are the highest quality. You can apply wrap over top the FM coating, if you want more heat barrier effect. You could also apply wrap over the uncoated FM pipe. I’m sure someone will chime in about pipe deterioration with wrap; true for traditional steel pipes, but the FM head pipe is made with stainless tube. Bottom line benefits of exhaust coating: less radiant heat transferred to the rider, and slightly enhanced power performance due to less parasitic loss from the hotter, faster exhaust gas inside the coated pipe. More details can be found at any of the coating websites.
