Default HD install instructions

Just a note of my experience with HD installation instructions for add-ons. Bought my first HD a month ago; 2011 FLHTCU. Of course I started adding on all the extras.

First was the Siren II module. Instructions said it went under right side panel; really goes under the left panel. No worries.

Second was adding dual aux power outlets in the Tour Pack and on the left side panel. Tour pack install worked ok but the template for drilling the 7/8" hole in the side panel is definitely wrong for the 2011. I kept looking at it and didn't think it would work but decided to drill where the instructions said to on the left side panel. It is too far aft and I had to drill another hole forward of where the template shows to install the aux outlet without hitting anything. Now I have a nice hole in my side panel. Anyone have a black 7/8" plug they would like to sell?

I will now triple check before using the HD installation instructions.

I just installed a chrome started cover on my Road Glide and the final two steps in dis-assembly to prepare for installation and then the first step in reassembly cracked me up.

You have to remove the starter end cap and bracket and the nuts for the bracket are right by the oil filler for the engine. So it says to remove the nuts and bracket, then remove dipstick (to make room to fit the chrome cover), then it says to install the new bracket. If I were to have removed the dipstick before installing the new bracket take a wild guess as to where I might have ended dropping the nuts, yep, in the dipstick hole.

That's why you have to read through the intructions first, sometimes I think not only the part is (Made in China), but the proof reader also.

I expect this from after market parts but I guess I was too trusting when I bought high priced parts direct from HD; lesson learned.

Some instructions cover several different model years in a family. You have to read them carefully to determine what's applicable to your bike.

I know the problem is that on the 2011 they moved things around to make them fit; ABS, etc. As a result when the instructions say 2009 and later, that doesn't always mean the new 2011.

I was just bs'n about dropping nuts in my bikes dipstick hole but if it did happen, maybe one of those magnets on the end of a radio antenna would get them out.
