Default Fuel leak 07 Ultra

Haven't seen this discussed, so here is the problem. 07 Ultra, took the tank off for paint about a year ago. Put it back on and everything is fine. Several months and a few thousand miles later and i notice fuel dripping from the tank outlet or what ever they call it. Check it out, unhook the line (quick disconect) stops leaking. Few weeks later starts leaking again. Disconect again, look things over, don't see a nick or anything. Leak won't stop this time.

Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you fix it?

First fix from Kerrville TX area, I'll buy you a steak and beer in May when I'm checking that area out as our new home.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I think there is a rubber O ring that can be replaced. It's probably dried out causing the leak. Mine (on my '07) went south and the whole assembly had to be replaced.

Read somewhere on here about a guy who used to make those fittings and had a fix for them. Might try a thread search and see if you can find it. He was sending PMs on how to repair them.

I had the same problem on my 08 SG last spring.

One evening I noticed a couple of drops of gas on the motor, under the connector, but everything seemed dry and I couldn't see or feel anything so I didn't think much of it. I got up and rode to work the next morning and when I parked I had gas all over my left leg and a drip about every 10 seconds. I disconnected the fitting and went into work. After work I used some industrial shrink wrap to seal it then went to the closest shop..... the local dealer. Long story short and almost $200 later I had a whole new fitting assembly installed that secures the hose much more securely. The mechanic even commented on how different the design was between the original and the replacement.

If I remember correctly the part itself was $70ish.

At least I won't have to worry about it again.

Where is this O ring? Didn't see one on the male end, and didn't see a reference to one in the service manual.

I could be wrong...But I don't think that you can get just the o ring from Harley.

It's just a basic fuel/hydraulic type quick disconnect. (almost like an air-line quick disconnect) Should have an "O" on the outside of the male fitting or on the inside of the female fitting, depending what type you have. You shove the male gas line into the female coupling and it clicks and locks, to remove you push up the outside ring to disconnect, sometimes the "O" ring will come off with the gas fitting and you won't notice it, you put it back and it gets fouled up and wont seal, so you replace the "O" ring and lubricate with some "O" ring lubricant or Vaseline.

Unfortunately you can not get the "O" ring from Harley, so you have to get the entire assembly.

It is the O-ring. There are two O-rings in the fitting on the tank. A small one up in the deepest part and a larger one closer to the opening where the line to the TB. The most common one to fail is the larger one.
When you had the tank off the O-ring tends to dry out and when you reconnect it gets damaged. HD doesn't sale the O-ring so you end up replacing the assembly. That O-ring is a number 905 and you can buy them from McMaster Carr, or send me a PM with your address and I will mail you some.
As for removing and replacing I use a toothpick to fish out the old and oil up the new one and carefully push it up into place with a blunted toothpick.
