I melted a set of rings on my 2010 103 SG.I think it was bad gas and running a 100 mph for about 8 hours straight. I have new rings and a oil cooler now! Im just hard on things.PS I will never ever waist my money on SE big bore kits again. In the near future Head Quarters all the way baby!!!!
I'm looking for thoughts on adding and oil cooler...Would you add the cooler before or after the initial break in period, and perhaps more importantly why?
I am going to add the HD oil cooler, just thought I'd ask if you folks had some thoughts as to when this should be done.
Install your oil cooler as soon as possible. There is no advantage in waiting until after the breakin period. The hd cooler has a thermostat and will not flow until you have reached normal operating temperture.
The first accessory I put on my 02 Ultra was a oil cooler. The Twin Cam engine is the hottest running engine Harley has ever made. This is why they have oil injectors that inject oil to the underside of the pistons. I would not run a Twin Cam with out an oil cooler. Just make sure you run a by pass valve (thermostat) as too cool oil is just as bad as to hot! Most if not all Harley oil cooler kits come with them.

Talking about road grim when I road to Alaska I noticed my motor getting a little hotter about half way up the Alaska Highway. The bike was really nasty so I thought I would hose it off. While hosing it off I put water from the back of the oil cooler and about 2 hand fulls of mud came out. LOL
I had originally planned on putting one on when I got my SG. Imagine my surprise when I found out it already had one on, from the factory.. I noticed last year that my Dyna got pretty toasty a few times during the summer, so I knew it was something I was going to be doing.. Cheap insurance I agree.
