If you are new to bikes, or at least to the touring class of bikes, I would recomend that you buy the Ride Like A Pro 5 DVD and practice the lessons in a parking lot. The lesson on slow speed maneuvering is worth the price of the DVD alone.

I've been riding a metric cruiser for the last 3 years. Had dirt bikes back in the day. I've had the motorcycle safety course. It was very good learned a lot. This is my first Harley and my first touring bike. My cruiser was close to the same weight, but I'm sure there is a learning curve.
