I have a 2006 Road King FLHRI with 550 miles on it, just a month old. This is my first Harley and back to riding after 23 years. While riding to work engine at operating temperature in traffic doing about 35mph in 3rd gear the engine RPMS went up not sure how high no tach like it was in neutral. This happen twice in the same short period of time less then a mile. Does anyone have an idea what may have happen?
Good question Hackd... If no acceleration, then you've got 2 problems since the clutch must be slipping...
I had a BMW that tended to "surge" from poor fuel injection (although it wasn't near as bad as a lot of them were), and since yours is an injected model there may be a computer problem....
My friend's '06 Street Glide started doing that, revving to about 2800. It would also die in low speed traffic and turns. It was a problem with the electronics. I don't know much about this, but was told that the guy he bought it from replaced the air cleaner and pipes with V&H, but did not do anything else. He installed a race tuner and now it runs okay.
According to Atlantic County Harley it is the clutch cable needing adjustment will let you know the outcome.
That should have been obvious...if the motor starts speeding up while the bike is in gear, yet you're not moving any faster, that clutch is just spinning inside the primary. While I like the new easy effort ramps they put in for the new clutches, I don't think they should have put a lighter duty spring in these big bikes, with our motor intended to put out lots of low end torque. They could have lightened clutch lever effort with a combination of a couple other things with better results in my opinion.
An update the bike has the bad injectors but while the dealer was test driving the bike stalled on them and they had a hard time getting it started, they are not sure what is causing it but they will change the injectors and try to find why the bike was hard starting. Will let you know the outcome.
