You buy a mini cooper or Toyota Prius for gas mileage. That said stock except for some slip ons and around town heavy on the throttle I am getting between 34-38 haven't done much highway miles yet
I had pretty much the same setup as you and the best i got with canned maps was about 38. I just added cams and had it dynoed and my last (2) tank gave me 33mpg. It does appear to be getting better. It has such good power (91.5 HP & 105.5 TQ) and rides so good I am not going to worry about it.
After a long winter nap and now that the bike has been out for a while I wanted to see how bad my mpg is. After replacing the stock air cleaner assembly with a Arlen Ness Big sucker, added the xied's year and a half ago and have had the screaming eagle slip-ons installed for the last two years my number yesterday was 37mpg. now this was an accumulation of highway and back road mileage with the occasional jump on the throttle. I am wondering what everyone thinks.
My limited is a week old now. Just got back from Leesberg Fl. Hwy mileage was 40 mpg best. City 32 to 35. When I picked it up I had the stage 1 added along with dyno'd and Vance and Hines slip on's. I know its running fuel rich right now for break in purposes.
I have a 2011 Ultra. I have the Bassani slip-on's, Xied's and the Arlen Ness Big Sucker. I mostly ride "2 up" and I am averaging between 34 and 36 mpg. That's with the catalytic
converter.
Similar combo, and after the install? MPG's went to the basement. Nominal power increase did not justify fuel consumption. Crappy preloaded map. I got it better, but can tell it needs tweaking. Tried to make a one-way 176 mile trip a couple weeks back and was running on fumes 20+ miles before my destination. Wound up putting in over 5.5 gallons. Yeah, less than 30 mpg. Never went over 80 mph, and the last 20 miles before fill-up I slowed to around 60. Fuel light was on before 130 miles. Anything over 75 mph and you can watch the gauge drop! Drive it like your grandmother and I squeeze perhaps 180 out of it. Definitely needs a tune on the Dyno, but I'd like to save for cams first.
After comparing some of those 'custom' preloaded maps, very little difference appeared. Minor differences, but it seems 13.8 AFR is simply plugged into the cells covering the average rpm range we'd mostly drive in. I thought they were more 'custom' than that.
If ya reall y want better mpg, get rid of the dj pc. Known for a long time to **** can mpg.

Really? Why would that be? For four years with the PCIII and PCV I got upper-40's for highway mileage using E10 fuel--max of 50.5 mpg on pure gas. Good mileage and performance have absolutely nothing to do with the tuner you install, but how the map or tune is created. If it emphasizes cooling you will sacrifice mileage, and vice versa.
To the OP, my main question is, what were the conditions you were riding in? I've got an 09 Ultra. I rode it stock for the first year or so of ownership. Round town and light freeway riding would yield 34 to 36 mpg as often as not. I had it on a few multi day rides and was able to get 38 to 39 on the road (70 mph +/-) and several tanks in the low to mid 40's up in the Arkansas Ozarks but that's relatively easy riding at sub 55 mph speeds.
These days, I've got FuelMoto's Stage 1 on my bike with the Jackpot slip-on's w/silent baffle, FM's AC, and PCV w/their canned maps. The bike is noticeably (seat of the pants) stronger than it was stock but not neck snapping by any stretch which is what I was expecting and what I got so I'm totally satisfied at this point. I was concerned about what it would do to my fuel mileage but after a year and about 10 to 15k miles, I can say that, for me, it made no difference at all in fuel economy one way or the other. The numbers are pretty much the same and I'm pretty **** about how I fill the tank and I check it every time. I've got a long commute to work and back. The round trip will pretty much kill a full tank of fuel and it's not uncommon to be running on the low fuel light when I get back into town. Generally, I'll average around 37 or so on this commute but it can change significantly for a number of reasons. The last time I made the run, we had some pretty hard winds while heading home and that knocked my numbers down in the low 33's. Wind, whether supplied by mother nature or your right wrist, will make the biggest difference by my experience but the 32 you got is not unexpected, unfortunately!
M50, you can request an ecomony map from Fuel Moto which will help on MPG, but in order to equal stock mileage you'll need to lean the cruise-range even more. I run 14.6 (stoich) in that range, have no heat problems with an oil cooler, and mileage is about as good as I believe this engine can do.
You should be getting at least 40 mpg on the highway (55-70 mph), even with FM's standard map. You can make some changes to your map if you want, which is what FM would do if you asked for their economy map for your bike, and it won't affect performance at all:
Open your map in the PC software and save it to a unique filename on your computer.
Select and highlight 2k-3k RPM @ 5-20% TP in your Fuel Adj. tables (front and rear cyl.)
Hit the pg-dn button on your keyboard seven times, which will reduce the values in that entire range 7%.
Connect the PCV to the computer and click on "Send Map."
Save the new map to another unique filename to your computer.
Try that and report back the results, but check it over several tanks. Any city mileage that gets in the mix will hurt your overall result, as I've never been able to get better than mid-to-upper 30's in town.
