Default Another SE Compensator install....

Just got done installing the SE Compensator (140274-08), chrome inner primary (160739-07), clutch diaphragm spring (137871-04, for the 2010 103" engine) and upgraded chain tensioner (139929-06B) on my 2007 FLHT. Took me 2 afternoons to do, mainly because I really was trying to be careful with the parts to not mark anything up. Handling the compensator/chain/clutch basket is a bit awkward but easily doable. I have not been able to test ride it as yet as the gravel drive is still a bit too muddy for me to go riding through it, but it sounds good on the stand. The old compensator looked fine with very little wear visible. But I only have 10,000 miles on the bike. I didn't have the correct size wrench for the nut on the end of the SE Compensator, but fortunately I had a huge adjustable wrench that worked great. I let it rest against the floor holding the nut while I did the torquing of the compensator bolt, back off then re-torquing.

One problem I did have, when I went to start it I had no power. At first I thought the battery died but a voltmeter check showed it to have over 12 volts in it, and a test light on the battery cable at the starter showed power. I was really stumped trying to figure it out, but since the only wire I had unhooked was the starter wire, I figured I would try there. I pulled the nut off and lo and behold, I had missed putting the ignition wire back onto the starter post. I had to pull these wires to gain access to the rear starter bolt. The hardest part of this install was removing and reinstalling the starter bolts and getting the starter free from the primary. I used some dialectic grease on the starter o-ring when I installed the primary over it. It is absolutely necessary to use a 1/4" ball end allen, long shank 3/8 drive socket, with extension and ratchet to get to these starter bolts, and the battery wire on the starter is right in the way of the rear one. So if anyone else does this install, make sure you hook up BOTH wires back onto the starter. It is easy to miss that ignition wire in the rubber boot.

Did 320 miles on the new SE comp & -98A clutch spring yesterday. It runs like a champ.

It was fun to compare my start to my dad's, who is scheduled to have the warranty work done this week. His knock on start-up is very noticeable...

Good work dude

Had mine done just last week as a warranty upgrade. The "springs" in my stock compensator came apart on my 07 Ultra with 53,000 miles at the same time my drive belt broke. The dealer stated they did not think they were related even though they happened at the same time and left me stranded on I-64. BTW, great response from HOG towing (within 45 minutes the flatbed tow truck was on site)!!
