i felt the battery was getting weak i replaced it yesterday had it on the tender all night ,fully charged, was hoping that was it, but nope.
would this be the known compensator problem? i just turned 21,000 miles. it has been banging and griding at startup for some time, not all the time but alot,
can i get through the summer, like this? can i check the compensator bolt through the inspection cover,or do i have to pull the primary cover? i wonder if the bolt is loose
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT ARE THE DANGERS? of riding like this if that bolt breaks or comes off the bike will lock up correct? THANK`S BILL
If it is the compensator, and it grenades, you will have a mess on your hands. I just changed mine and you can do it in a day no problem. There is a write up in this forum on how to do it with out pulling the inner primary. It worked great. I used a Dremel tool.
Mine was banging away. The starter was damaged and cranking slowly, the clutch basket (with ring gear) needed replacement and I replaced the stock compensator with an SE unit. It's fixed now, no banging, fast cranking with the same battery.

my bike seems to be cranking slowly too, did the compensator cause the starter and clutch basket problems,or the starter was damaged and you changed the compensator wile you were at it?
maybe i replace the starter first? it kind of seems like slow turning over cusing the bike to spit and backfire causing the bang.
thank`s for the help. Bill
I have an 09 EGC with23300 miles and they tell me I need a new clutch basket and stater. I have had a problem over the last three days with grinding and banging on start up. Doesn't happen all the time but enough to make me very concerned. I always start the bike in neutral. The thing that pisses me off is that I only have 23300 miles on the bike and the warranty ended four months ago.
I had to replace the entire clutch basket on my 07 RK with a 103..The ring gear had a bunch of broken teeth, and on that paticular engine you can not replace just the ring gear..While I was in the primary I also replaced the compensator..Make sure that you check all of the electrical connections as well..Have you pulled the drain plug on your primary and noticed any metal ?
I have an 07 Ultra. It was doing the same time. First there is a service bulletin for loose starters. Not falling out of the primary loose just enough cause it to arc between the starter flange and the primary mounting surface. That fix is ..pull the starter, look for any signs of arcing. Clean both surfaces with fine sandpaper, steel wool or a scotch bright pad. Apply some dielectric grease to both surfaces and reinstall the starter making sure it is tightened to spec...................that didn't fix mine. Next rather than spending $375 for a new starter I bought the starter clutch assm. Around $120. Installed it myself..reinstalled the starter. Starts like a dream. Be careful of going to the dealer. They swore up and down it needed a new starter. $500 plus if they do it. If they do just the starter clutch assm it is still very pricey as they have to pull the starter apart ( more labor) I took the bike back before they started working on it and fixed it myself.
Right now I'm waiting to see if HD will cover the clutch basket and starter, even though it is 4 months out of warranty. I'm hoping to find out this Wednesday. If HD refuses to do anything than I'll bring it to my local wrench, who does all my work.
I went on a 3 mile ride this weekend and of course the bike started great every time, so now I'm not to sure if I believe the dealership.
Would a loose or bad ground connection under the seat cause the same problems?
