Several have done it. I was going to, but I went with a new shield from Fastaire. Check out Fastaire.com or fastaireone on ebay or "renoglide" here on the forum. He has a great company and the shields only cost like $25.

Hi..If you are only removing an inch or so, I've trimmed numerous shields using a stationary 6x48 belt sander w/medium or coarse grit paper. Mark it out and trim accordingly. (It doesnt take long at all). Afterwards, finish edge by hand. Just be careful that the sandpaper does not slip off edge and scratch shield. End result looks as good as factory job.

I used a Dremel on slow speed with a cutoff wheel. Practiced on the upper 2" I was cutting off. Taped the area to be cut with blue masking tape and traced the cut line using my buddy's short shield as a template. It took about four passes to cut through it. Sanded the edge by hand with a block sander and finished it with PS-11 Auto-paper.
