Default Why do you do that?

I was wondering why some people try and cover up or white out their motorcycle or vehicles' license plate in a photo. Do you try and cover it from people while riding down the street in public? What information (none) could one gain by seeing your plate in a photo verses out in public while you are riding?

I agree, I think some are worried with a plate people can figure out where you live. Maybe someone looking for nice houses to rob and pillage or if they don't like you they can find you.

Kinda silly I think. I used to do it, then it was brought to my attention how silly it was.

Yea I think it much better to white it out when your doing something wrong on it , then just posting Pictures.

People are Paranoid now a days and one person says they got your info off the net. If someone is looking they would be looking Local and not on the net

Except for the fact that some people have access to databases and can find your name, address, and driving record pretty easily. For example, I can take your tag number and get the registered owner then turn around and run the RO in NCIC and poof, i found you...all from jotting down your tag number from the web. Now, i have integrity so I won't do it. Doesn't mean the next guy won't...

Also, the amount of nerds that can hack the government's computers have no issue hacking a DMV database and getting info.

Identity theft is a serious problem, why risk it?

i agree its silly, but to the op, while your plate is exposed while crusin around, how many people remember it or even really pay attention to it (unless its a custom plate), if your looking at a pic, and there is a plate # it very easy to write it down, or serch it if you have those abillities, wich most of us do not, thats why i agree its silly. but the fact is it can be done. just my 2 cents

Well, when I am on the street, I have no choice, I have to display that tag. But here, I can maintain some privacy if I choose to.

Most of us pick aliases to use on these boards and we don't give our real names or publicly display our email addresses, or even use our main email addresses (some use throwaway accounts). For instance, the OP does not even have his real city in his header...just SW Michigan. We want some seperation between our RL world and the internet world. Unless we choose to let others in on our complete identities, addresses, etc. Why is that behavior any less odd to anyone?

After years of hanging around on different forums and boards for a variety of topics I've found that there are a lot of weird folks out there that I would like to limit my exposure to for a variety of reasons. I've learned the hard way to keep personal info to a minimum until there is some reason that I choose to share it.

In forums like this, people mask their email addresses to keep automated programs from pulling valid emails out of posts so they can be added to spam lists....who knows, maybe a similar bot can be used to pull tag info from pictures at some point so you can wind up with 40 offers in your inbox every day for moto insurance, undercoat rust protection, and Viagra, leather pants, Chinese aftermarket parts, or other targeted marketing crap, I dunno.
