I'm considering a SE compensator for my '09 Street Glide. I get the clunk sometimes when starting and I can hear it banging back and forth when I turn the engine off. None of this is real loud and I don't feel it's an immediate problem. Most of the posts I found related to the starting issues but real question for those that have installed the SE compensator is whether or not it has helped with low-RPM vibration 2000-2200 RPM or has it improved ride at all. My vibration doesn't really level out until just under 2500 RPM. It's not a huge problem but it is one I'm willing to throw a little money at.

Have you tried searching the compensator on this forum yet? I'm sure there are a ton of talks out there already you might find interesting. I put the SE comp on my '09 King and all of that nasty bang back was immediately gone. It feels like much more torque when shifting, much more responsive. Didn't notice anything with vibrations. All I can give you is what I saw change in my bike. The first time I started it after I let it down from the lift I could see a differance. The clunk was gone at start-up and the shifting was a lot smoother and quieter. Money well spent for me.

That's good to know. Maybe I should wait a little longer and see if the clunks etc. get any worse before doing anything. Other than getting rid of the clunks and some saying that their shifting is smoother, I'm not sure the new compensator will help me. I don't have any complaints with shifting and the clunks on mine are not that loud. As far a the vibration, maybe I just getting old and cranky. This bike doesn't shake anything like my old shovel.
I just did the se comp on my08 road king. the starter, when warm, sounded like it would fly accross the pkg lot.. Mine hammered when started warm, but was ok when cold. I would not wait till you break the starter gear or the ring gear on the clutch hub. My check engine lite now comes on and I think I broke the oil pump when I broke loose the compensator bolt. Will tear apart sunday if the install of the pressure gauge tells me to. rats. ran and shifted good till the yellow light came on. the comp makes a diff on my bike. so did tightening the rear belt.
Just did the SE comp upgrade on my bike this spring. I had not had any problems with the old compensator, other than the fairly common loud bang at startup. However, I had another reason to go into the primary (bad oil leak), so I figured it was a good time to change the compensator. The old compensator had some galling on the shaft extension and the sliding cam, and that type of damage tends to get worse over time.
If you are planning stage II upgrades on your bike, the SE compensator is definitely something you should consider.
I had my compensator changed last year, and it made all the difference in the world. The big bang stoped when starting and the 2500 to 2800 rpm vibration stoped. Money well spent. I paid the 200 bux difference between OEM and SE.

I carried my bike into the dealer for the exact same symptoms your bike has thinking it was the comp. Mech called me the next day and asked if I could swing by and take a look at what he found. I think he called it the inner and outer bearing that runs on the clutch shaft were totally out. He also had to replace my starter since it had been dragging due to all of this. He told me my comp was good he checked every way he could with no problems found. My bike now starts up smooth and all the vibration I was getting is gone. I had extended warranty and it came pretty close to paying for itself my bill would of been 975.00 but it only cost me 50.00. Most of that was the starter.
Installed SE compensator in my 08 starter bang and a lot of the clunking is gone. When you see the SE compensator compaired to the stock one you will see why
