I just finished a three day ride from NY to Arkansas. Last night while cruising down I40 I looked down at my voltmeter and the needle was bouncing around between 14 and 15 volts. I stopped for gas and when I fired up the bike it was back to around 14. Same thing happened today. After running 70-75 mph the needle starts to move around a bit. While riding thru the mountains in Arkansas I was up around 15 volts.
Is there a problem with the gauge, with the charging system, with the battery ( battery is 2 years old)?
This seems to happen when running around 3000 rpm and above for prolonged period.
The voltmeter on my '03 EG Classic stayed at around 15 volts when running and 12 volts with the engine off, making me think I had charging (or regulator) problems.
After checking it at the battery with a known good voltmeter, I found out it was the gauge.
